Liz Cambage, the center for the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA and a member of the Australian Women’s National Basketball team, faced serious allegations from Nigerian players. They claimed that after a scrimmage, she directed racist remarks toward them, casting a shadow over her reputation.
An anonymous Nigerian women’s basketball team player, speaking to The Daily Telegraph, revealed that Cambage allegedly referred to them as ‘Monkeys’ and made derogatory comments such as “go back to their third world countries” during the scrimmage. This incident stirred controversy and brought Cambage under scrutiny.
Due to Cambage’s remarks, the Australian team had to prematurely end the scrimmage, leaving the Nigerian players unsatisfied with her subsequent apology. Following the incident, Cambage withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics.
She cited reasons for not being physically and mentally prepared. In her statement, she expressed that her aspiration was to secure an Olympic gold with the Opals. To attain this goal, she recognized the necessity of being in peak physical and mental condition, which she wasn’t at that time.
“Anyone that knows me knows one of my biggest dreams is winning an Olympic gold medal with the Opals. Every athlete competing in the Olympic games should be at their mental and physical peak, and at the moment,” Cambage wrote in a statement. “I’m a long way from where I want and need to be.” Cambage said.

Liz Cambage in talks to represent Nigeria in next year’s Olympics
Liz Cambage, previously accused of making racist remarks towards the Nigerian Women’s Basketball team during a scrimmage before the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, is now capturing attention as she hints at a potential move from the Australian Opals to the Nigerian national team.
In a recent interview with Taylor Rooks, the Los Angeles Sparks star disclosed that she has formally requested to depart from the Australian team and has applied to play for the Nigerian basketball team. Cambage remarked, “We’re filing for me to leave the Australian team, so I can represent Nigeria. I’ve been in touch, I’ve been communicating with them since all of this unfolded. This is what I meant, people don’t know the full truth.”
Several indicators suggested Cambage’s potential departure from the Australian Women’s team, as earlier reports mentioned that Opals coach Sandy Brondello attempted to reach out to Cambage for participation in the 2022 FIBA World Cup.
Cambage’s absence was felt as the Opals secured a bronze medal, narrowly missing out on the gold. The question arises whether Cambage will be able to integrate into the Nigerian team amidst the allegations made by her potential former teammates.
