Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic has made it a habit of scoring in big numbers. But no one envisioned that he would score 73 points in a game. This unreal performance came against the Atlanta Hawks in a recent game. The stat line has led to basketball fans reeling in a state of shock.
The game against the Hawks was a chance for the Mavericks to stop their three-game losing streak. Doncic responded with a historic performance. Going 25-33 from the field for a 75.8 field goal percentage is a personal best. Add to that 8-13 3-pointer efficiency and a 15-16 free-throw efficiency, the performance saw Doncic in rampant touch.
Doncic’s 73 points is the fourth-highest single-game scoring record in NBA history. He joins the illustrious list led by late greats Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant. Doncic blew out his previous record of the Mavericks which was 60. He finished the first half with 41 points, which set the new franchise record for a half set by Mavericks great Dirk Nowitzki previously.
The Mavericks rode Doncic’s milestone performance to win against the Hawks 148-143. Doncic’s numbers were enough to cover the production from four Hawks’ starters. It is glaring to note that 6 of the 9 players the Hawks fielded finished in double-digits. It wasn’t enough against the Mavericks who only had 3 (including Doncic) of their 9 players in double-digits.
How the basketball world reacted to Doncic’s historic performance
When Luka Doncic started his dominant run in the first half, fans were happy to see the superstar take over the game. But little did they realize that he was aiming much higher. Despite the relentless defensive assignments the Hawks rotated onto Doncic, he was able to create history. So, to watch the young Mavericks superstar take over the game in this fashion came as a shock to the world.
When the final buzzer sounded, basketball fans were still reeling from the shock of watching the record-setting performance. However, many settled their emotions and penned words of appreciation for the Mavericks superstar. Check out some of their reactions below;
The fans loved the career night from Doncic. Hopefully, Doncic can turn this and other high-level performances into establishing himself as one of the greats to play the game, something he looks right on the path for.
