The FIBA World Cup has been in full swing, entering the later stages recently. The quarterfinals between Slovenia and Canada took place, with Canada coming out on top with authority, beating the Slovenians 100-89. The game includes the double ejection of superstar Luka Doncic and Canada’s Dillon Brooks.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Doncic was ejected after receiving his second technical foul while trying to flop because he was being double-teamed. These antics may work in the NBA, but they were not something the FIBA officials took kindly to. Brooks has been known for his antics throughout the NBA and for taunting players constantly; it finally fired back on him during the match. He was ejected after receiving a disqualifying foul for taunting.

Doncic sounded off during his postgame interview claiming foul play, stating, “The referees told to one of the guys, ‘we not gonna call a foul on him (Dillon Brooks) cause he’s coming at us.’ I think this is not fair, I know I complain a lot, but this is- I don’t think its fair.”

Brooks eventually got the upper hand on the Slovenian superstar as his team blew out their opponents and advanced to their first ever sem-finals in history. He helped out his team as well, as before the ejection Brooks scored an efficient 14 points off 5-7 shots in 28 minutes of play.

Dillon Brooks has some history of drama

Dillon Brooks is no stranger to controversy, making a name for himself solely out of being an instigator rather than the quality of his play. This FIBA quarter finals fouls isn’t even close to the amount of fouls he got in the NBA. During the 2022–2023 NBA season, Brooks received 17 total technical fouls, which was just one short of Draymond Green, who received the most during the season, with a total of 18.

Brooks has a history of trying to get under players’ skins with his antics. His confidence probably came from the fact that his franchise at the time, the Memphis Grizzlies, was full of young talent hungry to prove themselves, along with the fact that they were the second seed in the Western Conference heading into the playoffs. Brooks shots were most highlighted during the Grizzlies first-round matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.

After losing Game 1 to the Lakers, they won Game 2, and Brooks took shots at LeBron James after the game. He called James “old” and said, “I poke bears. I don’t respect anyone until they come and give me 40.” These words would eventually backfire on him, as the Lakers took a 3-1 series lead with James dropping 22 points and 20 rebounds.

To add salt to the wound, the Lakers sent the Grizzlies home in Game 6, beating them by 40 points and winning 125-85. Brooks was fined $25,000 for refusing to speak to reporters after Games 3, 4, and 6. He was even let go by the Grizzlies despite being a solid contributor, but eventually signed a deal with the Houston Rockets heading into next season.
