The NBA dunk contest has been quite a buzzkill since 2016, however, last night Mac McClung brought it back to life. The Philadelphia 76ers signed him to a two-way deal just days ago and now he is in the limelight. McClung being 6 feet 2 inches became only the second person ever after Spudd Webb to get 3 50-point dunks in the same contest. He also became the least experienced player to ever win the competition beating Kobe Bryant’s record.

However, the highlight of his contest was the incredible 720 dunk on his last attempt. It brought back memories of the iconic Vince Carter dunk which was said to have revived the dunk contest. Before 2000, the dunk contest was suspended for 3 years since nobody was interested. Vince arrived and put on one of the most spectacular shows ever including a 720 dunk of his own. The dunk was similar right down to the commentary as well. Kenny Smith gave everyone the iconic ‘it’s over’ line when Vince Carter hit his 720 and brought it back out for Mac McClung. McClung even made the same iconic gesture which has gone viral on social media.

Even though his 720 dunk was the highlight of the contest, his first dunk saw him jump over two people and tap the ball on the rim before dunking it. McClung is no stranger to the dunking game. He has been a household name for dunk fanatics for a long time because of his high school mixtape. He has an entire catalog of mind-bending dunks which you can never get tired of watching.

Mac McClung has come out of nowhere and taken this All-Star weekend by storm

McClung rose to fame initially with clips of him dunking that went viral on social media. His senior year high school mixtape is a certified classic, from dunks to handles to layups, he was the complete package. McClung played 3 years of college and Georgia town and Texas Tech. He joined the G league in 2021/22 and won rookie of the year. He has been on two NBA teams, the Lakers and the Chicago Bulls, and played 1 game each. McClung has won the dunk contest as a part of the Sixers without ever having played for them.

McClung, like all basketball lovers, has been an avid fan of the dunk contest youth and was inspired by them. In his interview after winning he said “I loved Vince Carter. Just watching the Zach LaVine & Aaron Gordon Dunk Contest was just something I enjoyed so much“. He replicated Vince Carter’s dunk to honor the legend who saved the dunk contest in 2000. Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon were part of the most iconic dunk contest of the 2010s in 2016.

If I get to be a part of this one day, I hope to make an impact like those guys“, said Mac McClung in his press conference when reminiscing on watching dunk contests while growing up. McClung is still young and has vowed to participate in next year’s contest as well. After reviving it this year, there is no doubt he will be invited next year to put on a show again.
