Magic Johnson one of the greatest point guards ever to step on the NBA hardwood could have been greater and added more to his already legendary legacy. But unfortunately, in 1991 he had to part ways with professional basketball and retire from the league. As he had contracted HIV. He contracted the disease due to having numerous partners on the bed. And, at that time HIV was considered nothing but death. As medical science wasn’t that advanced and the research to find the cure was still going on. But Magic Johnson’s announcement really changed the whole situation.

Magic Johnson was one of the very first global celebrities who came out in the open and publically revealed being HIV-positive. His announcement was basically an awareness campaign for the whole world. As he started to take over the wrong and senseless ideas innocent people had regarding HIV/AIDS. Magic Johnson also started his very own foundation during his fight against the disease.

He was given the maximum time of 2-3 years to live, by the doctors as his T-Cell count was 203. But fortunately, we still have him around and it’s been more than three decades thanks to the advancements in medical science. Today, the disease is curable as we have the right treatment and the right information with the correct awareness for it. But back in the days, the situation wasn’t the same for Magic Johnson and others like him even small innocent kids who were at no fault.

Magic Johnson has defeated HIV and is living a healthy life out there. But let’s not forget how the situation in the 90s had the 5× NBA Champion suicidal and worried about living another day or not. But he continued to fight and ended upon the fortunate winning end with a BIG W. In his journey, he also motivated many people like him from every age group. As once he visited Nickelodeon’s AIDS special in 1992 and there he consoled a 7-year-old HIV Positive girl who broke down in tears because society didn’t really accept her.

Magic Johnson motivated Hydeia Broadbent, who was confused with the situation she was in as society wasn’t accepting her. The Lakers legend consoling and motivating her quoted: “Aww… You don’t have to cry cauz we are normal people okay. We are… You just want to be treated like that right? You want your friends to play with you and call you up and come by and still have sleepovers and things like that. Right, and it’s okay to cry.” Further, he also mentioned how that program will help in educating and spreading awareness about HIV to everyone.

Just like Magic Johnson even Hydeia Broadbent got a big dub and is 38 today as she continues to fight against HIV by educating others about the disease which is often misunderstood by many around. From being scared of death to being one of the biggest names in the sports world Magic has been on a rollercoaster journey since he contracted HIV.
