The Washington Commanders have new owners and a new era ahead of them. The NFL franchise announced Friday that it has agreed to sell the team to a group led by Josh Harris, the majority owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils. The group also includes NBA legend Magic Johnson and billionaire Mitchell Rales, the co-founder of Danaher.
The deal, which is subject to NFL approval, is worth about $6 billion. That would make it the largest sale of an American sports team ever, surpassing the $4.8 billion sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020.
The sale ends the controversial tenure of Dan and Tanya Snyder, who bought the team for a reported $750 million in 1999. The Snyders faced criticism for their handling of the team’s name change from the Redskins to the Commanders last year, as well as a lawsuit that alleged they colluded to deceive DC residents about an NFL investigation into the team’s toxic workplace culture and allegations of sexual assault.
“We look forward to the prompt completion of this transaction and to rooting for Josh and the team in the coming years,” the Snyders said in a statement.

Harris, who grew up in nearby Chevy Chase, Maryland, said he was honored and excited to become the new owner of the Commanders, who compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division.
“We look forward to running a world-class organization and making significant investments on and off the field to achieve excellence and have a lasting and positive impact on the community,” Harris said in a statement on behalf of the ownership group.
Johnson, who also has ownership stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Sparks and LAFC, said he was thrilled to join Harris and Rales in owning the Commanders.
“I could not be more excited to be a partner in the proposed new ownership group for the Washington Commanders,” Johnson said. “Josh Harris has assembled an amazing group who share a commitment to not only doing great things on the field but to making a real impact in the DMV community. I’m so excited to get to work on executing our vision for the Commanders and our loyal fanbase!”
The new owners will inherit a team that finished 7-10 last season under head coach Ron Rivera, who was hired in 2020. The team has several young stars, such as defensive end Chase Young, wide receiver Terry McLaurin and running back Brian Robinson Jr. The Commanders will kick off their 2023 season on September 10 at home against the Arizona Cardinals.
