The United States national team experienced a humiliating loss to the German national team, with a final score of 111-113 in the FIBA World Cup Semi-finals. NBA Legends Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Gilbert Arenas share their repugnance for Team USA’s loss on Twitter. “Just watched the USA Men’s basketball team play Germany in the FIBA World Cup and I was very disappointed we lost 111-113. Now instead of playing for Gold we will be playing for Bronze,” said Johnson. Magic famously won gold with Team USA during the 1992 Olympics while playing alongside legends like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, and Patrick Ewing.
Gilbert Arenas also expressed his distaste for the defeat against Germany. Arenas claimed that the Team USA roster for the FIBA World Cup was “F-list” compared to what the USA has. “Team USA took that weak roster to the World Cup and look what happened!” said Arenas after USA’s loss to a Lithuania team without their star player Kristaps Porzingis. The Team USA roster consisted mainly of bench players and rookies, with no bonafide stars playing in the tournament.

Team USA has historically been unbeatable in international competitions; however, in recent years, fewer stars have chosen to play for Team USA. Players opt to prepare for the NBA season over playing in International competition. International competition has also improved significantly in recent years. International players like Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Luka Doncic are dominating in the NBA while also playing for their respective countries.
Team USA relied heavily on Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson and Austin Reaves while also playing rookies Paolo Banchero and Walker Kessler. Although Team USA had future Hall of Fame coaches Steve Kerr and Tyronne Lue, they could not overcome Germany in the semi-finals of the FIBA World Cup.
Team USA won gold in the 2020 Olympics with key contributions from stars like Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Draymond Green. The FIBA World Cup roster was significantly less experienced compared to the Olympic roster from 2020. Team USA could have used contributions from proven stars like Kevin Durant and Draymond Green.
