Former LA Lakers superstar Magic Johnson shared a close bond with Los Angeles owner Late Dr. Jerry Buss. In his recent appearance on “Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers,” Magic Johnson revealed on the show that he had diagnosed with HIV before the 1991-1992 NBA season. Hence, he retired on 7th of November, 1991. He told about how he and Jerry Buss both reacted to this news.
Magic Johnson said, “Well, we both cried together. It was a tough day for both of us and a tough moment. But he actually became my second father. He actually took me in. He took me to my first USC football game. We went every Saturday that they played at home.” He further added, “I’m indebted to him. He is a man that touched so many peoples’ lives. He allowed me to be one of the Buss boys.”
Magic was an important asset to the LA Lakers team under Jerry Buss’ ownership. Magic helped the Lakers win five championships during the 1980s. The duo shared a father-son relationship and were also best friends of each other. They went around to parties and watched football matches together. Jerry Buss and Magic Johnson together entered the NBA league but one entered as an owner and the other as a rookie player. This partnership of theirs turned to be fruitful and helped each become successful in their respective careers. Buss also helped Johnson become an efficient businessman after his retirement.

The LA Lakers were very successful under Buss’ ownership, winning ten NBA championships. The team had star-studded players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and Pau Gasol. They also had top coaches like Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. Jerry inspired the Lakers’ Showtime era with his vision that basketball games must be entertaining. His contributions to basketball were recognized by his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. Jerry Buss received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement in 1983.
