David Kohler, the president of SportsCards Plus Auctions, has created a jaw-dropping homage to his beloved Los Angeles Lakers through the biggest collection of Lakers memorabilia worldwide. As one of the most devoted fans of the storied basketball team, Kohler’s passion for collecting Lakers’ treasures spans an impressive four-decade journey. The Lakers shrine boasts an array of over 2000 pieces of memorabilia, representing iconic eras from Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, and finally to the current era of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
The collection had game-worn jerseys, shoes, trophies, and much more that once belonged to Bryant. One of the Lakers’ all-time greats, Magic Johnson, recently paid a visit and found himself in awe of the collection that surrounded him. As Kohler passionately shared stories about his prized items, he had an unexpected surprise when Johnson emerged from behind a cut-out. Johnson joined the fun, trying on the famous goggles that his former teammate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sported during his illustrious playing days.
Reflecting on his time with the Lakers, Johnson expressed profound gratitude, remarking, “Nobody else has a collection quite like David Kohler’s. All the greatest players in Laker history and the championships that we all won, all this is priceless… I’m a Laker, so when you look at all of this, you say, ‘Man, I was a part of some of this’.” The visit took a lighthearted turn as Johnson picked up a pair of jersey shorts from his era, finding amusement in their shorter length and calling them ‘hot pants.’
In a truly awesome moment, Johnson’s eyes landed on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s iconic goggles, and he couldn’t resist trying them on for size. He recounted the legendary ‘Mr. Skyhook’s’ pre-game ritual, vividly describing how Abdul-Jabbar would initially place the goggles over his head while warming up, only to pull them down over his eyes and secure them tightly when it was time to get down to business.
Johnson’s admiration for Abdul-Jabbar’s prowess was palpable as he recounted facing off against other all-time greats like Moses Malone, knowing full well that Abdul-Jabbar would bring his absolute best every single time, making for a challenging and long night for his opponents.

Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: One of the deadliest duos in basketball history
Before the Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James–Anthony Davis era, the Lakers had the most powerful 1-2 punch the league had ever witnessed. Johnson was drafted first overall by the Lakers back in 1979 when Abdul-Jabbar was one of the best players in the league. In their very first year together, the Lakers won 60 games and went on to win the NBA Championship with Johnson claiming Finals MVP honors, thereby becoming the first rookie to ever win an NBA Finals MVP award.
Johnson, with his exceptional passing and court vision, was the ultimate playmaker, while Abdul-Jabbar, renowned for his unstoppable skyhook shot, dominated the paint like no other. Their ability to read each other’s movements and anticipate plays made them virtually unstoppable.
They formed an unbreakable bond on and off the court, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to numerous NBA championships and cementing their status as one of the most dynamic and lethal duos in basketball history.
