“Retire his jersey number completely” Magic Johnson urges NBA to retire Bill Russell’s #6 across the league
Bill Russell created one of the greatest legacies the sport of basketball has ever seen. The legend unfortunately met his end from a natural death at the age of 88. The NBA All-Timer breathed his final breath at Washington where he lived peacefully with his family.
Besides being a basketball star, he was a big time civil rights activist and life mentor as well. The Boston Celtics family had a lot of respect towards him for the work he did as a former player himself. He won 11 titles with the team and continued to stand tall as a guide for the younger generation of players.
Bill Russell was more than just an athlete
During his time in the NBA, the league was predominantly filled with players of the white race. Bill Russell was one of a few African-American individuals that participated in the ball game during the 50s and early 60s. The former MVP played along with several Celtics legend like Tommy Heinsohn and Bob Cousy.
Russell had become the first black head coach in the NBA. He coached the Seattle Sonics, Sacramento King and the Celtics initially. He paved way for many young black individuals of the league as well. Bill was a victim of racial discrimination as he watched his parents suffer be racially abused. He was also victim of abuse throughout his career as a Celtic.
Magic Johnson suggests the NBA to retire #6 for all teams
Bill Russell was considered as a very unselfish and well rounded team player. Throughout his career and even now, he is viewed as a very underrated figure. Many active players came forth praising the legend for his encouraging nature and loving character. Russell never shared a harsh moment with anybody.
Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson recently tweeted to the NBA saying, “Commissioner Adam Silver should retire number 6 across the @NBA in honor of Bill Russell’s legacy!” This would be a very challenging task to do unless players like LeBron James agree to change his jersey number from #6 to something else. James had historic runs with the Miami Heat wearing the number. But regardless, the NBA needs to realise that Bill is more than deserving of the credit.
