When the Boston Celtics played the Raptors on Saturday, Jayson Tatum was already absent. Marcus Smart yelled in anguish after twisting his right ankle late in the first half against the Raptors, and they continued the game without two starters. Robert Williams III was also disqualified because of hyperextension of the left knee.

Smart asked for help as soon as he fell and needed assistance. Trainers assisted Smart in leaving the field, and he struggled to put any weight on his right leg as he entered the locker room. At halftime, the Raptors were up 57-50 on the Celtics. Prior to getting hurt, Smart had two points and four assists in 16 minutes.

The Celtics overcame Smart and Williams’ absences to defeat the Raptors in an exciting game. But as soon as the game was over, attention turned to the health of their two important players. Fortunately, interim Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla provided promising developments in their status. He said, “Rob hyperextended his knee. It’s nothing serious, just obviously taking precaution. He felt good coming off the court. Smart, obviously you saw, sprained his ankle. X-Rays were negative, it’s just a matter of how he’s able to cope with it day-to-day.”

The Toronto Raptors were defeated 106-104 by the visiting Boston Celtics on Saturday thanks to Jaylen Brown’s 27-point performance, matching their longest victory streak of the year. Reserves Malcolm Brogdon scored 23 points for the Celtics, and Grant Williams added 25 more. All 12 of Payton Pritchard’s points came in the final round.

Marcus Smart’s ankle sprain looked severe and he may miss some games healing from it. But the update provided by Joe Mazulla is positive and he can be back very soon. With him and Williams out the defensive end will suffer for a while. And, all the pressure would be on the superstar duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Even though the Toronto Raptors had already dropped 27 games this year, Saturday’s loss to the Boston Celtics stood out in an otherwise disappointing campaign. Boston needed two jump balls and, maybe more crucially, two strange timeout calls in the final 14.1 seconds to defeat Toronto and leave with the victory.

With just 14.1 seconds left, things got hot. Boston was attempting to advance the ball past the half-court line after Gary Trent Jr.’s miss, with the score at 106-104, in order to start running down the clock and forcing a foul. Instead, Toronto gained possession with a clear numerical advantage thanks to a bad Payton Pritchard pass. But Raptors coach Nick Nurse called a timeout rather than seizing the opportunity.

O.G. Anunoby of Toronto was injured in the third quarter and was unable to finish the game. He contributed 12 points to the team’s total of 104. For the Raptors, who have dropped three straight, Pascal Siakam scored 29 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out 10 assists. Precious Achiuwa contributed 17 points, and 11 rebounds. Scottie Barnes provided 10 points, and Gary Trent Jr. supplied 22 more.
