The Boston Celtics are heading back to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010 after beating the Miami Heat on the road 100-96 in Game 7 Sunday night. The Celtics led wire-to-wire, and responded every time the Heat went on a run. Miami went on a late run and cut the deficit to two points, but Boston managed to hang on for the win. Jimmy Butler did most of the offensive work for Miami, finishing with 35 points while playing the entire game, however Butler’s heroics were not enough this time as Boston held their nerve and handed Miami a heartbreaking loss in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Boston Celtics transition from a team that went from sitting just outside the top tier of the Eastern Conference to being four wins away from the franchise’s 18th championship began the moment Ime Udoka grasped the microphone at his introductory news conference last June. Taking over for Brad Stevens, Udoka got the most out of the Celtics roster and pushed them to many improvements this year. Notably, Udoka transformed Boston into the most dominant defensive team in the league.

The Celtics weren’t viewed as title contenders when Marcus Smart shockingly called out All-Star teammates Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown for refusing to pass the ball after a November loss to the Bulls. Marcus Smart, has now transformed into a indispensable unit in this well-oiled machine of Boston Celtics. He is without a doubt one of the most important players on this roster and they probably would not be where they are now, in which the Celtics coach has played a monumental role, as Smart revealed.

There are times when I turn the ball over, and he’ll pull me aside and say, ‘What the f–k are you doing? Ge your team together,’” Smart said. “I had my own time frame in terms of changing habits and building a foundation, It wasn’t the time to kick a chair or tip over tables a month or two into the season.” Udoka has spoken about bringing change to Boston before, and has put his action speak louder than his words.

Smart isn’t exactly a mild-mannered individual himself and perhaps this is the type of aggressive coaching he responds to. This appears to be the case considering how Smart bagged the Defensive Player of the Year. 2021-22 is Smart’s most successful season in the Celtics star’s career and there’s no denying that coach Udoka has his fingerprints all over it.

It was Jayson Tatum’s playmaking, a much-improved skill we’ve seen from him this season, that led to open 3s in the corners for Boston. You could see all the improvements these core guys, including Marcus Smart, have been working on over the years paying off in the biggest game of their careers tonight, and it just so happened to lead to a spot in the NBA Finals. What stand between Tatum and glory is Stephen Curry and company, who will stand tall in the NBA Finals ! History awaits.
