“People will still say LeBron is disloyal for leaving any team” – Marcus Smart’s reaction to SURPRISE Grizzlies trade has NBA Twitter fuming at Celtics

For a player that gave it his all every night, dived for loose balls, displayed leadership skills and was loved by fans, Marcus Smart seems to have been done wrong by the Boston Celtics. Smart was recently traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a 3-team trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics and Tyus Jones to the Washington Wizards.

Smart wasn’t a part of the initial trade deal that almost went through. That deal had Porzingis coming to Boston and reigning sixth man of the year Malcolm Brogdon being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, but it fell apart due to health concerns being faced by Brogdon. With the Celtics trading away Smart, they have now lost their starting point guard and would most likely have to rely on Derrick White to fill that hole for the time being. For Memphis, they are getting a great veteran leader who can set things right for a team that desperately needs guidance.

Smart was reportedly ‘shocked’ when he found out that the Celtics traded him. According to Adam Himmelsbach, Celtics writer for The Boston Globe, Smart was completely blindsided by the deal and reached out to close friends and family and “expressed hurt that out of all the guards on the roster, the Celtics decided to part ways with him.”

NBA Twitter was definitely not pleased with Marcus Smart being traded

Losing the emotional leader of your team is never a great feeling and the Celtics fans were very upset when they found out about the news. Fans across the NBA world too expressed their displeasure at the trade. Here are some of the reactions:

Marcus Smart loved Boston and wanted to retire there, so see this trade is truly heartbreaking. Although, this is not the first time that the Celtics organization has traded away the heart and soul of the organization. Isaiah Thomas, who played for the Celtics for three seasons from 2015-2017 and came to be loved by all fans because of some historic performances, was traded away too.

At the end of the day, the NBA is a business and teams will do what they feel works best for all stakeholders associated with the team.
