After the NBA’s Board of Governors met on Wednesday, they finalized a new set of rules pertaining to load management. These rules have a strict set of guidelines to reduce the amount of games star players miss. This means that organizations across the NBA will have to plan out new schedules for all of their players. However, the NBA has given some players exemptions from these rules. These include Stephen Curry and LeBron James.
One of the new rules forces teams to reduce the number of one-game absences the star players have. Additionally, it adds that a team cannot rest both their star players in a single game. However, it also states that players who are either 35 years old or have at least 34,000 minutes or 1,000 games of experience are exceptions to these rules.
This means that players like Curry and James can get away with resting for extended periods of time without having to face any consequences. On the other hand, it means that a team like the Dallas Mavericks cannot rest Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving for extended periods of time. This severely reduces their recovery period and could cause unnecessary stress on their bodies, which could lead to injuries.
This shortened period of rest is a concern for Mavericks owner Mark Cuban since it could affect the health of his star players. He was specifically unhappy of the fact that the NBA minimized the number of 3-day breaks players got.
GMs and teams throughout the league are busy trying to understand what the new rules mean for them. They’re also attempting to find loopholes in the policy that could increase the rest their players get. While teams are making changes, we will only be able to gauge the true impact this rule will have on the league once the regular season begins.

How do these new rules affect the fans?
These rules are actually a positive development for fans. It means they can spend money on tickets with the assurance that their favorite star player will be playing the game. Many fans have reacted positively to these changes, with one saying, “I love these new NBA rules regarding load management.. the fact that you could watch a sport you love and not know if your favorite players are playing that night because of rest has always been ridiculous”.
Some fans however, have found it doubtful that these rules will be enforced. Some say that teams will just find ways to get around them. Regardless, at this point, speculation will get the fans nowhere. All they can do is wait for the regular season, and watch the teams’ adjustments to the load management rules unfold.
