Mastermind behind $2.5 million NBA health care fraud hit with final verdict

In October of last year, reports of the NBA health care being defrauded had come to light with 19 former NBA players accused. The scheme was to make the health care plan pay millions of dollars for fake medical procedures and the accused ringleader on friday pleaded guilty on his involvement.

Terrence Williams was a player for the New Jersey Nets and three other teams from 2009 to 2013, He entered his plea to conspiracy and identity theft charges before U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni in Manhattan. The hearing resulted in him paying $2.5 million as restitution to NBA plan and had to forfeit $656,673 to the United States.

How The Scheme Worked And The Verdict for Williams

 According to Reuters, Prosecutors said Williams got other players to submit false invoices for medical and dental work that was never performed, in exchange for at least $300,000 of kickbacks. The invoices showed former Boston Celtics players Tony Allen and Glen Davis receiving crowns on the same six teeth on the same day, and Davis receiving crowns on eight teeth in Beverly Hills although he was in Nevada at the time.

Williams furthermore was accused of Identity fraud, he took the role of a health manager who “questioned” a reimbursement to scare a player who had not paid the kickback. Prosecutors revealed at least $5 million of false claims were submitted with the defendants receiving $2.5 millions through the proceeding.

Williams is reported to serve 10 to 12 years in prison and mandatory two more years for identity fraud. Terrence Williams was taken to jail in May after prosecutors said he was threatening a witness via text messages. The defendants who have pleaded guilty also include former players Chris Douglas-Roberts, Jamario Moon, Eddie Robinson and Anthony Wroten, and Patrick Khaziran, a Los Angeles chiropractor. It is reported that Douglas-Roberts was the player that Williams allegedly tried to scare.

The New Jersey Nets drafted Williams in 2009 as the 11th overall pick, he did not have much of a standout career playing with the New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics while occasionally going down the G-League. He averaged 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists in his career. In 2013, he was waived by the Boston Celtics.
