On 6th February 2023, a 43-year-old billionaire was finalized as the majority owner of the Phoenix Suns. And it was none other than the former Michigan State Point Guard Mat Ishbia. Ishbia is also the CEO and Chairman of mortgage lender United Wholesale Mortgage.
Mat Ishbia reportedly promised Suns coach Monty Williams to give him the talent required to win a championship. The young billionaire did not take much time to make his presence felt. On 9th February, the Suns traded away forwards Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson along with first-round draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets for Kevin Durant and TJ Warren. Right after the deal, Ishbia in an interview with Boardroom expressed his impatience to win a Championship. He said, “Jump right in. We have a great team, can we make it better? Can we improve? I’m not the kind of guy who sits there and says, ‘Let’s plan so in six years we have a chance to win a championship.’”
A former player himself, Ishbia played for Michigan State as a walk-on Point Guard from 1999-2002. He was a part of their team that won the National Championship in 2000. He is also the owner of the WNBA team Phoenix Mercury who are chasing their fourth Championship. He is excited about the same and has expressed his readiness to take the reigns up after dedicating 23 years of his life to the sport and 20 years as a Businessman.

Chris Paul can’t wait to share the court with Kevin Durant
Suns Point Guard Chris Paul reacted to the Kevin Durant trade. Excitement knew no bounds for the 37-year-old as the Suns’ odds of winning a championship hit the skies. In 2021, Paul and Devin Booker led the Suns to the NBA finals and went up 2-0, only to be eliminated in 6 games by the Milwaukee Bucks. With the arrival of Durant, the Suns have upgraded their roster massively.
In an interview with ESPN, Paul spoke his heart out. He stated, “It’s different. It’s taken some getting used to. I was telling [Devin Booker] the other day, I played with a lot of great players — I got a chance to play with Blake [Griffin], I got a chance to play with David West early in my career, I played with James [Harden] — [but] probably never two guys of this caliber, as far as Devin and KD. I know I’m not taking it for granted. I told [Booker] not to.”
With Durant eyeing a return shortly after the All-Star Break, it would be interesting to see how well the trio synchronizes. Besides, the Suns will look to capitalize on the momentum with which they are entering the All-Star Break.
