Former NBA player Matt Barnes was always known for his aggressiveness and trash-talking as a player. Little did we know, he carries those traits on his sleeves post-retirement as well. At least that’s what was perceived from a recent altercation between Barnes and an announcer. This altercation has blown up on the internet. Basketball fans are not happy with Barnes’ actions.

Barnes’ sons Carter and Isaiah play for Crespi Carmelite Celts High School’s basketball team. They were playing against the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines in the Mission League Tournament Finals. In the third quarter, an opposing player fouled Carter Barnes. Since the referee did not call a foul, Carter started complaining to the referee.

The referee issued a technical foul on Carter. Seeing this, Matt Barnes started yelling profanities at the referee from the sideline. His voice was so loud that it started to hamper student announcer Jake Lancer.

Lancer was trying to get through his commentary. He met Barnes eye to eye as he was getting interrupted. This caused Barnes to approach Lancer. Barnes put his hand firmly on Lancer’s shoulder and they had a verbal altercation.

Lancer’s hand gestures suggest he did not know what Barnes was referring to. Seeing this, HW staff came over to stop Barnes. Even a parent came down from the stands to help stop the altercation.

Barnes claimed that Lancer told him to “shut up”. Lancer claimed that Barnes was calling out profanities to the referees, which interrupted his work. But, recordings of the commentary from Lancer do not show him saying anything to Barnes. Barnes was later seen being pulled away by staff to stop the confrontation.

Basketball fans did not like Matt Barnes’ is doing’ actions

Matt Barnes’ history of aggressive behavior might be acceptable in the NBA. But, in the more secure environment of a high school, it will not be. At least that is what the whole world is now feeling towards Barnes. Fans did not like the former Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors player arguing with a high school announcer.

Fans across the world are calling for strict measures to ensure Barnes does not repeat his antics. Some are even calling for Harvard-Westlake to take action against the player previously married to Gloria Gavan. Check out some of their reactions below;
