Congratulations on like, arguably the best career that anyone has ever had in the history of any sport ever,” Rapinoe said.

The Storm honored Bird’s legacy by retiring her No. 10 jersey, making her the second player in franchise history to receive this distinction after Lauren Jackson. The festivities began on Friday with a flag bearing Bird’s number flying high above the Space Needle and ended on Sunday with an emotional speech from Bird to the fans at Climate Pledge Arena.

I will forever miss it, and that’s OK,” Bird said. “I think some people try to avoid missing it when they’re in my seat up here, and the reality is I’m always going to miss it.

Bird, who the Storm drafted as the No. 1 pick in 2002, spent her entire career with the franchise, adding to the rich basketball history of Seattle. She also represented the USA in five Olympics, becoming one of only five players to win five Olympic golds in basketball.

Regardless of where one stands on the debate of who is the best athlete ever, there is no denying that Sue Bird is one of the most influential and successful players in WNBA history.
