Memphis basketball recruit Mikey Williams is facing serious legal trouble after he was arrested on Thursday for allegedly pointing a gun at five people at his house. Williams, 18, posted $50,000 bail and was released from San Diego Central Jail early Friday.
He is one of the top prospects in the class of 2023 and committed to Memphis earlier this month. He joined a star-studded recruiting class that also features JJ Taylor and Ashton Hardaway. Williams played for Lake Norman Christian School in North Carolina and Vertical Academy in Charlotte before committing to Memphis. He is known for his explosive scoring ability and athleticism.
In a news release, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said that Williams was involved in a verbal altercation at a house in Jamul, a rural area east of San Diego, on March 27. When five people left the house in a car, shots were fired at them. However, no one was injured.
“Five people got into a car and as they were driving away, shots were fired,” according to the sheriff’s department. “The car was hit, but no one was hurt.” The sheriff’s office declined to share his mug shot, citing its policy of only releasing such images when they pose an immediate danger to the public.
The victims identified Williams from a photo lineup, and police found the suspect vehicle at a nearby hotel. Williams was arrested and charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held at the Shelby County Jail and is expected to appear in court on Friday. Three of the people in the car that was shot at are minors.
He also made headlines a month ago for different reasons. One was for a tweet from Overtime, a sports media company that covers high school and college basketball, football, soccer, and other sports. The tweet featured a video of Williams, who was seen dunking over another player and later stepping on his hand.
NBA Twitter reacts to Mikey Williams’ arrest
The news of Williams’ arrest shocked many NBA fans and analysts who had high hopes for his future. Some also chastised Williams for jeopardising his prospects of making it to the league by engaging in violence.
Some fans on Twitter are comparing Williams to Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant, who also had a gun-related incident in his past.
Williams’ arrest is a shocking and disappointing development for one of the most promising prospects in the country. He has a bright future ahead of him if he can overcome his legal troubles and focus on his basketball career.
