Mercury star Brittney Griner allowed to communicate with WNBA family via emails and letters whilst strict detention in Russia

Brittney Griner was detained at the Moscow airport in February as the Russian officials say they found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage. She now is facing drug smuggling charges which can get her maximum 10 years of imprisonment in Russia. Brittney Griner’s pre-trial was also postponed as many believe she is now a “political prisoner” held by Russia who will be used for some benefits or a good exchange with the United States of America. As her detention came during the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine. But last month the United States of America came out and declared Mercury star as “wrongfully detained” while Russia hasn’t yet made a public statement regarding it.
Recently, the Associated Press reported that Brittney Griner is allowed to write to her mates, best friends, and colleagues at WNBA even though she still can’t play with them or even see them. She has been able to receive hundreds of e-mails and letters during her detainment. Her agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas, has created an email id for her which hasn’t been public yet. But it was shared to the WNBA player’s union who further shared it with their members by text messages.
Even though e-mails are one of the simplest and quickest method of communicating in this digital age. Brittney Griner is still not allowed to use that personally as the process for her is very complicated. Every letter or email she receives is first carefully examined and screened by the Russian officials and once approved they are printed and sent to her lawyers. Replying back to all those e-mails and letters is also not that easy for the center. As she is allowed to only write on a paper and have her lawyers to take a photo of it or dictate her response to them.

WNBA players on communication with Brittney Griner
Several members have been writing down to Brittney Griner, some are sending her riddles, personal messages, words of motivation, and even Sudoku puzzles to keep her entertained. Los Angeles Sparks forward Amanda Zahui B. is one such player who has been communicating with her and talking about her detainment and this process she quoted: “When she responded to my second letter it blew me away. I was like she responded!! In my third letter, I was like ‘hey best friend, we are officially best friends now.’”
Amanda Zahui B. also said: “She jokes in her letters. I don’t know how she does it with what she’s going through. She’s an amazing soul. She brings light in a situation like this. I don’t think a lot of people could manage to do that.” Still, it’s not even predictable when Brittney Griner will be back home but for sure she is a strong one and will keep fighting till justice is served. People around the globe are out in her favor and want the Russians to release her out as soon as possible. There are also several petitions being signed by millions of fans for her release. As many WNBA and NBA stars are using their platforms to get more and more of support.
