Jalen Green was just a kid when he met Michael Jordan, but he still remembers the harsh words the legend had for him. Green, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NBA draft and a rising star for the Houston Rockets, shared a story on Paul George’s Podcast P about how Jordan roasted him for wearing Adidas slides at one of his basketball camps in San Diego.

I got a crazy story,Green said. “I went to Michael Jordan camp in San Diego. I’m walking to practice from the dorm, and I got like high socks on up to my knees, baggy shorts. Like, my swag was terrible. I got Adidas slides on and he just walked over to me and was like, ‘You need to take them weak-a** Adidas slides off.’ I look back like, ‘What you mean?’ [He was] like, ‘You need to get some Jordan slides.’”

Green said he was stunned and embarrassed by Jordan’s comment, but he also felt honored that the legend noticed him. He said he quickly switched into some Jordan slides that were given to him at the camp, and that he still keeps them as a memento.

Jordan may have dissed Green’s footwear choice, but he can’t deny his talent on the court. The 19-year-old guard has been putting up impressive numbers for the Rockets this season, averaging 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Green has been leading the Rockets’ young core along with fellow rookies Alperen Sengun and Kevin Porter Jr. The Rockets had a terrible season this year with a 33-49 record as they ended their season.

Green has also stayed loyal to Adidas despite Jordan’s jab, as he signed a shoe deal with them before the draft. He said he chose Adidas because they gave him creative freedom and supported his vision.

Green may have been humbled by Jordan in his childhood, but he has not let that stop him from pursuing his dreams and becoming one of the best rookies, and performing even better in his second season in the league.
