“He smoked me” Michael Jordan gets personal on JR Smith trash talk

J.R. Smith played 16 seasons in the NBA, winning two championships with LeBron James in Cleveland and Los Angeles after establishing himself as a reliable veteran shooter later in his career. Many current and former NBA players would gladly take Smith’s place, and it’s reasonable to say he had a good career. Smith is currently pursuing a second sports career as a golfer, playing collegiate golf at North Carolina A&T and becoming a face of the inclusive and diverse golf movement.

While JR Smith has had the opportunity to play golf with a number of superstars after his retirement from basketball, none have piqued his interest as much as when he got to tee it up with Michael Jordan. Smith remembers matching Jordan one day and then witnessing Jordan “smoke” him in the second-round while also dishing him some scathing trash talk.

JR Smith’s Rich NBA history

J.R. Smith charmed fans for over two decades in the NBA, entering the professional ranks right out of high school during a period when the NBA was nothing like a youth movement like we see now. From being introduced as a two-guard by Reggie Miller to winning the coveted Sixth Man of the Year award in 2013 to scoring over 12,000 career points, JR Smith might be the most entertaining player on the court on any given night. However his career saw an abrupt end

J.R. Smith appears to be remembered primarily for his worst moment on the court, as his Game 1 gaffe in the 2018 NBA Finals appears to play in perpetuity. J.R. has carried that experience with him throughout the rest of his time in Cleveland, through another title (this time with the Lakers), and through his abrupt banishment from the league. Something he believes was deeper than his play. J.R. was as open as he could be when asked if he believes he was blackballed from the NBA. “Yeah, absolutely,” he says. “Anyone can sit here and tell you that’s true.”

The aftermath of Smith’s career

JR Smith, who was drafted with the No. 18 pick out of high school in 2004, is now a student at North Carolina A&T State University, where he has a 4.0 GPA and plays golf for the school’s team. Michael Jordan too isn’t far behind , well renowned for his basketball skills, but now that he is retired, he enjoys golf. From a competitive sense, he once remarked that golf is the “hardest game to play.”

Michael Jordan was regarded as a trash talker throughout his playing days. He even trash-talked his teammates on occasion. Jordan was clearly not the type of person to hold back in that regard. Michael Jordan was recently reported to have trash-talked JR Smith on the golf course. He informed Smith that the shooting guard had a “good career,” but it “wasn’t a great one.”

Speaking in a podcast, JR Smith recalled, “So we was betting, right? So I doubled down on one of my bets. I was like, 5 front, 5 back, and 5 overall. He was like, ‘alright, cool cool cool.’ I said, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, hundreds, not thousands. Hundreds. And he said, ‘no no no no no, I know what you talkin about. I know what you meant.’ And then he threw this jab at me low key, and I was like “ooh, that’s a good one.’ He said, ‘you had a good career, it wasn’t a great one, you had a good one.’”

This is, without a doubt, outrageous trash talk from the GOAT. JR Smith did, in fact, have a long and productive career. He was named Sixth Man of the Year and won two tournaments, but trash-talking is a necessary part of being a competitive golfer, and Michael Jordan plainly likes it. This time, JR Smith was the unfortunate recipient of his trash-talk, and he is unlikely to be the last.
