The NBA GOAT Debate is one that has no conclusion. Every analyst, player and fan will have their own definitions of what it means to be the GOAT and will accordingly assign players the title. While it is impossible for the NBA community to collectively crown a single player as the greatest, it doesn’t stop them from trying. The latest in the list of people who have shared their opinions on the matter includes NBA legend, Carmelo Anthony.
Carmelo Anthony recently shared the 3 players who he thinks are worthy of the GOAT title. His first two players were, unsurprisingly, Michael Jordan and LeBron James. It was his 3rd choice however that raised the eyebrows of fans. The 3rd player on his GOAT list is NBA legend, Julius Erving. Julius Erving, popularly known as Dr. J, is remembered by most as an NBA icon. He was known for his artful finishing and his powerful dunks. Even Jordan admitted that some of his moves were inspired by Dr. J.
Dr J’s style of play was innovative and changed the way players played the game. His iconic layups are considered by many fans as not just basketball moves, but pieces of art.
Dr. J started his career in the ABA, the NBA’s then-rival. After the ABA and the NBA merged, he played 11 seasons in the NBA. Currently, he is actively involved with the Philadelphia 76ers in a formal capacity. He enjoys a peaceful life and is known to be someone who doesn’t crave the spotlight. Despite retiring over 3 decades ago, he still lives on in the hearts of NBA fans.
How good was Julius Erving?
Dr. J is an extremely decorated player. During his 5 seasons with the ABA, he was a 3x MVP, 3x scoring champion and 3x ABA champion. In the 11 seasons he played in the NBA, he was 11x All-Star, 5x All-NBA, 1x MVP and 1x NBA Champion.
Dr. J was also known for his extreme kindness and humility, something which has led to him being a fan favorite even as the years have passed. Many remember his moves as iconic childhood memories that they tried to imitate in their backyards.
While it can be argued that many candidates eligible for the title of GOAT have better resumes than Dr. J, others might say that being the GOAT is not just about accolades. It is also about, impact, influence, greatness off the court and legacy. In all of these, Dr. J excels. At the end of the day, the GOAT title is subjective. If Carmelo Anthony considers Dr J as his GOAT, it certainly isn’t blasphemous, and all things considered makes quite a lot of sense,
