The duo of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen will always be remembered as the best duo in the history of the league. They won six championships together without losing once in the finals. Their 1998 championship run is known as ‘The Last Dance’ because their team was about to be separated by GM Jerry Krause after the season. MJ retired after the 1998 season, and Scottie went on to have a career riddled with injuries after leaving Chicago.
In a recent episode of ‘Club Shay Shay,’ Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe talked about how the relationship between MJ and Scottie deteriorated as ‘The Last Dance’ continued in the 1998-99 season. Stephen A. was saying that Scottie deserved to look back for pulling off antics during a live game. He refused to come back after getting subbed out for Tony Kukoc, which didn’t help his case.
In Scottie’s defense, Shannon said the reason the relationship between MJ and Scottie deteriorated was because Jordan called Scottie selfish for asking for a contract when he was due for a back surgery. Shannon said that because of the stance that MJ took against Scottie in the situation when he was earning pennies in comparison to Jordan, it really displeased Scottie, leading to their fallout.
“When Scottie was talking about having back surgery and he wanted a contract, and Jordan said he was being selfish, and even though I might agree with it, I ain’t saying nobody’s gonna be selfish because I want everybody to get as much money as they can, so I am not gonna say that. I just think that Scottie was surprised by the stance that Jordan took and what he said,” Shannon said.
The history of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen’s feud
As teammates in Chicago, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen developed a lifelong friendship that started during their championship-winning days. The release of ‘The Last Dance’ contributed to the demise of their romance. Enmity was triggered by Scottie’s memoir, which pointed out how the documentary prioritized Michael Jordan over the team.
According to Scottie, the documentary was used by MJ to enhance his image and regain the spotlight. Scottie mentioned that MJ, leveraging the authority granted by Netflix, crafted the documentary in a way that showcased his greatness rather than that of the team as a whole. Adding to the already tense situation, Marcus Jordan, MJ’s son, started dating Scottie’s ex-wife, Larsa Pippen, shortly after her divorce from Scottie.
