When you talk about Michael Jordan‘s illustrious career, it’s pretty normal to hear tales of his unmatched dominance for a record period of two decades. “Air Jordan” was considered a dominant force on and off the basketball court. Despite his dominance, Jordan has been a part of various controversies. One such scenario arises when Bill Cartwright, a Chicago Bulls team mate stood up to him and did not back down from his overwhelming personality.
The incident unfolded in 1989, this was Bill Cartwright’s first season with the Bulls. Charles Oakley, one of Jordan’s closest friends and a fierce defender was traded to acquire Cartwright’s services from the New York Knicks. Jordan was filled with betrayal and resentment and this marked the beginning of the turbulent relationship between the two stars.
Cartwright’s relentless harassment was Jordan’s response to the trade. Jordan unsportingly instructed not to pass the ball to Cartwright during crucial moments. During training sessions, Cartwright found himself in difficult situations as he was mocked for his playing abilities. This behaviour persisted until Cartwright could take it no more and in anger, he stood in front of Jordan and said, “I don’t like what you’re saying to our teammates about me. I don’t want you to do it anymore. If I hear you do it again, you’re never going to be able to play basketball again because I’m going to break both of your legs.”
How Bill Cartwright’s candid words altered Michael Jordan’s approach and fueled Bulls’ success
Jordan was shocked by this move, surprisingly the unfiltered exchange of words made the legend reconsider the approach. Jordan realised that the toxic environment which was created for Cartwright wasn’t something the young lad called for.

As a result, the six-time NBA champion began to trust Cartwright, and the improved relationship yielded more contributions for the team.
The evolved relationship helped the duo achieve remarkable success in history. Cartwright and Jordan secured three championships with the Chicago Bulls during this period. Cartwright transitioned into an assistant coach role under Phil Jackson.
