“I didn’t think it would be right away” Mike Conley gives brutally honest admission on Utah Jazz’s terrific start

Mike Conley

Mike Conley recently opened up about the air of uncertainty surrounding his future with the Utah Jazz this offseason and the stellar start from the team this season. Conley and the Utah Jazz are the top seed in the Western Conference so far this season, which to many, is one of the biggest surprises of the year. In the interview with NBA.com, Conley also spoke about the role of a veteran he is playing with the Jazz and the development of young bright talents like Colin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson.

Mike Conley and the Jazz have won 12 of their 18 games and have recorded wins against some of the best teams in the NBA. They recently ended their 3 games losing streak with a thriller win against Phoenix Suns 134-133. They also defeated Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday to secure the top spot in the West.

Although it has only been 18 games for the Jazz into this 2022-23 season they have been highly impressed with their team effort so far. About the start of the season, Mike said, “I can’t say that I did. I didn’t think it would be this right away…We’re going to play harder, smarter and try to win the game.” In absence of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, young players like Jordan Clarkson and Colin Sexton have become the primary options for the offense and they have certainly risen up to the demand.

Young talents are performing best to their capability and have been largely taking care of the offense with Conley. Speaking of their run so far and the roster Mike said, “We have guys that all have individual goals with wanting to prove the world wrong about them and how we all can improve. We all have this dog and grit about us. You put that together in a pot and mix it up, and you’re seeing what the result is.

Mike Conley and his wife had a difficult offseason with the Utah Jazz

For Mike Conley, the offseason was very tumultuous, as Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell had both been traded from the team. It was natural for Mike to expect himself to be traded as the Jazz were trying to rebuild. For Mike, it was inevitable that he was going to get traded from the Jazz and had to start a new life away from Salt lake City.

Speaking about the Jazz offseason blockbuster trade, Conley said, “I was just like everybody else, I was waiting to get the phone call that I was going somewhere else.” Mike Conley and his wife May Peluso were restless about their fate and wondered whether they should send their kids back to the same school system or should wait. Conley said, “Even all the way up to training camp, I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know who was going to be here, and if I was going to be here or not. Once I knew I was going to be here at least to start the season, I focused on what I needed to focus on and get out there and play.”

Conley has been ruled out for at least two weeks after sustaining a minor knee injury during Jazz’s game against Blazers. Mike suffered an injury early in the 3rd quarter and never returned to the court afterwards. The veteran has been averaging 10.2 points and dropping career-high 7.9 dimes this season with the Jazz.
