Mike Woodson reveals just why he would sign Carmelo Anthony in the NBA

Carmelo Anthony and Mike Woodson

Carmelo Anthony is the all-time leading scorer for the US men’s basketball team, he is a 10x All-Star, a member of 6 All-NBA teams, a four-time Olympic medalist, and one of the NBA’s top 75 players. Carmelo averaged almost 14 points in his last season with the Lakers, which is still more points than a substantial amount of players in the league. Yet, Anthony is currently a free agent without a team for the second time in his career at this point.

Mike Woodson, the former New York Knicks head coach believes that Carmelo still has games left in his tank. When asked about his thoughts on Carmelo being out of the league, Woodson said, “If I was still coaching in that league, he would be on my team. That’s just how much respect and love I have for Carmelo Anthony and the body of work that he’s put into that league.”

Woodson also added that Melo is a superstar and his talent could never be questioned. He said, “I don’t think his talent’s the question. Someone might give him a shot to come back… I still think that he can get you 15-20 points a night if he’s coming off the bench.” Woodson is right in saying that with Anthony, it is not the question of talent, but as the teams are moving away from veterans and constructing their rosters around young stars, it is difficult for the free veterans to find a spot in the teams.

Woodson further added, “You know, I have nothing but love for Carmelo. I think he’s gotten a bad rep over the years, and I would love to see him back in the game. And I think it’s still good for the game to have him around. Only time well if he gets back.” Last year, while playing with the Lakers, Carmelo averaged almost 14 points a game with the Lakers before being a free agent. Since then, he has been searching for a new spot and several teams could use spot shooters like the Lakers, which lacks shooting depth.

Carmelo Anthony’s career took a hit with the NBA team’s new approach to building future

Woodson was not wrong that Carmelo Anthony could easily average between 15-20 points if he is given the time in the rotations. However, there are a number of factors that have contributed to him being out of the league right now and teams not pursuing him. Despite compromising his alpha ego in Portland and Los Angeles and coming off the bench, Carmelo has found himself without a job this season.

After joining the Lakers last season, Anthony averaged 13.3 points per game in 26 minutes, which is above average for players playing under 30 minutes in the game. However, the teams in the league are leaning more toward younger players who could contribute on both ends of the floor. Carmelo Anthony is 38 years old and does not possess the athleticism of the young stars in the league. His lack of athleticism proves to be a liability on the defensive ends.

Moreover, the teams in the league are reconstructing themselves around their young stars. New faces like Ja Morant, Anthony Edwards, Shai Alexander, and others are rising to the occasion and have brought a fresh new fanbase for themselves. However, the league could still use Carmelo Anthony as he still has a lot left in the tank.
