In light of the onset of the regular NBA season, recent news that surfaced in the league got everyone’s attention. The incident in question arose when the NBA’s official referee account on Twitter reposted a particular clip. The clip showed the Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum fouling Jalen Brunson from the New York Knicks. The referee account admitted that they missed the foul on Tatum and should have awarded three free throws to Brunson.
According to sources, the NBA implemented a new rule for the referees. The rule allows the referees to give out technical fouls from this season onwards. It favors something more punitive than the usual fines or warnings for fouls in the game. This is because penalties in a general scenario impact the overall game. The effect of a wrong call is much greater resulting in teams becoming upset.
One such incident did take place in the recent match of the Boston Celtics going against the New York Knicks. Jalen Brunson contested to shoot a three-pointer in the fourth quarter after landing on Jayson Tatum’s foot. The NBA’s official referee account reposted the incident with a statement:
We missed the foot-to-foot contact which should have resulted in a personal foul and reviewed for flagrant. Had no foot-to-foot contact existed, this type of secondary and theatrical movement by Brunson would meet the criteria for a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul."NBA Referee Official X account.
Had the foul been considered on the court, Brunson would have had an advantage with an opportunity to shoot three free throws. On the contrary, this instance was being compared to when the Lakers went up against the Celtics and had the same situation when Jayson Tatum fouled LeBron James on his way up for a layup, and the Lakers star didn’t get the foul.
NBA Fans react to the foul by Jayson Tatum over Jalen Brunson
In the recent match against the Knicks, Celtics star Jayson Tatum fouled Jalen Brunson for which the Knicks deserved to receive a free throws opportunity. However, that didn’t happen. Fans called the referee biased when it came to the Boston Celtics and said they sided with the Celtics. The referee’s official X account admitted the mistake on social media. It did not sit well with the fans.
Fans went on the internet to react to what the referee’s official account admitted. Here are some reactions:
