“He’s more interested in his broadcasting career” NBA Analyst believes there is no way Draymond Green should be offered a max contract
Kevin Wildes talks about Draymond Green on different Franchise
Golden State Warriors shut down many doubters after they won the 2022 NBA title in dominating fashion. Draymond Green led the charge for them on the verbal end, firing back at the critics around the globe. Though he wasn’t consistent on the court, Green was vocal about his team’s performance and defended his star performers every now and then. This week Draymond Green could possibly seek a max contract extension from the Golden State Warriors, giving media personnel time to weigh in with their views.
The 32-year-old defender is an integral part of the Warriors dynasty. Having helped the franchise to their 6th finals appearance in 8 seasons; winning 4 championships in those productive years. However, there is this notion that the Warriors’ setup is perfect for Green as it masks his offensive deficiencies. It is believed that Green will not get a max contract from any other team if the Warriors don’t offer him one.
On Fox Sports’ “First Things First,” analyst Kevin Wildes argued about how Green would be a perfect fit for any other team if he fails to get the max contract from the Warriors. Wildes singles out Brooklyn Nets that could use someone like Green.
Is there a possibility of Draymond Green moving away from Bay Area?
Draymond Green completed the core in the Golden State Warriors when he was drafted by them in 2012. Stephen Curry was an elite shooter, Klay Thomson also proved effective on both ends of the floor, and Draymond’s introduction gave the Warriors the defensive stalwart they were looking for. The team won its 1st title in 2015, and then never looked threatened when played in full capacity.
But now that their Core is not younger, and Cap Limits is not allowing the franchise to keep hold of most of their stars, we might see the change of scenario at the Warriors. Green is eligible for a new contract as soon as August 3, and sources told The Athletic’s Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson II that Green believes he deserves a maximum contract that would lock him in for $164.2 million over the next five seasons.
That is, without question, a lot of money for Green – a player who hasn’t averaged more than eight points per game since 2017 and at times looked like a shell of himself during this past season. Slater and Thompson II added that “the Warriors have no plans to offer Green a maximum extension, and there isn’t any current traction on any type of extension.”
Keeping this in mind, Draymond might be the 1st one to exit the Bay Area. Wildes spoke about how his defensive abilities and leadership would do the Brooklyn Nets a world of good.
On the show, Wildes said, “Isn’t Draymond Green the exact person, the exact personality, the exact skill set that the Nets need? Ok, they need leadership, they need a little bit of fire, they need defense. So, the idea that Draymond is only uniquely valuable only to the Warriors, I don’t think that’s true.”
He added, “I think there are teams out there, specifically the Nets, that say, ‘Huh, Draymond is the exact guy we need.’ I’m just talking about, overall, Draymond’s skill set.” While there is no contact or confirmation news for the Green making any move away from the Bay Area, reuniting him with Kevin Durant (if he stays) is a very intriguing idea.
Although the Warriors’ hesitation with extending Green this offseason appears less to be about the team’s perception of Green’s value and more about the timetable Golden State typically takes with extensions; Slater and Thompson II noted the Warriors usually wait until a player has one year left on his current contract before signing him to a maximum extension.
