LeBron James enters his 20th season with 37,062 career points, needing 1,326 to break Kareem Abdul- Jabbar’s record. If he averages 27.1 points per game, (his lifetime average) and does not miss any games, James will establish the record in the Lakers’ 49th game, against the San Antonio Spurs, on Jan. 25 at home. Adding time for rest or the inevitable injury or two given how James’ previous seasons have gone, as well as an expected drop in his scoring average with Anthony Davis back healthy, it’s more likely that LeBron will catch Abdul-Jabbar later in the season.
Because of his powerful mix of size and court vision, James’ game has been likened to Magic Johnson’s and with all of James’ accurate passing throughout the years, he’s on pace to pass Johnson on the all-time assist record. With 10,045 assists, James sits seventh, just 97 behind Johnson for sixth. Already the first player in league history to rank in the top ten in total points and assists, LeBron would become the only player in league history to rank in the top five in those categories with 291 assists, passing Mark Jackson in fifth place and Steve Nash in fourth.
