“I can’t go abject failure, but he is yet to prove a lot more” NBA Analyst tempers Charles Barkley’s “abject failure” comments on Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant and Charles Barkley
Charles Barkley’s recent comments on Kevin Durant and calling him an abject failure has produced numerous reaction from the NBA league. Many fans brought out the hypocrisy in Barkley’s statements as he himself did not win any championships. Regarding the comments made by Charles Barkley, the following NBA Analyst had arguments to Barkley’s claims.
Chris Broussard, On the Odd Couple, felt what Charles said about KD was out of hand and differed by saying, “ To call his years in Oklahoma City an ‘abject failure’ is abject lunacy. Kevin Durant led Oklahoma City to great heights. In fact, he led them as far as Charles Barkley led a team, which was to the finals.” while he did find some truth in Barkley’s words and believed Durant still had alot left to prove, “I can’t go abject failure. I’ll go he has yet to prove he can lead a team to a title. Karl Malone didn’t prove it. John Stockton didn’t prove it. Charles Barkley didn’t prove it. Allen Iverson didn’t prove it. None of us would call them abject failure.”
Charles Barkley’s Career as a Player
Charles Barkley to modern and more recent basketball fans is an analyst but the television personality too had an amazing stint cementing himself among one of the greats. A former league MVP, 11x All-Star and 5x NBA First Team selections. Charles has a sheet that outranks many players in league history.
Even with all of these achievements, a thorn in Barkley’s legacy has always been the lack of a ring which has always haunted him even after him. Looking back at his career, many similarities can been found between him and KD. Both won their MVP’s when they were the leaders of their teams, KD in OKC and Barkley on the Phoenix Suns. Both left their teams in hopes of winning the coveted trophy, Durant joined the Warriors to team up with Curry becoming a back-to-back champion, whereas Barkley would team up with Hakeem Olajuwon and Scottie Pippen in Houston but would get eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
It is unwarranted for Charles Barkley to call out Durant for doing the same thing that he had done was Broussard’s point and the title of “an abject failure” should not be attached to Durant as many players who have also not won a championship like Karl Malone, Allen Iverson or even Charles Barkley are not considered failures but are respected as greats.
Durant stays with the Nets.
Durant requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets in June for which Barkley called him Mr. Miserable and unhappy, “He just seems like a miserable person, man. I call him ‘Mr. Miserable.’ He’s never going to be happy. Everybody’s given him everything on a silver platter. He was the man in Oklahoma City. They loved him. He owned the entire state. He bolts on them and goes to the Warriors and wins back-to-back championships, and he’s still not happy. Then, he goes to Brooklyn. They give him everything he wants, and he’s still miserable. That’s why I call him ‘Mr. Miserable.’”
With four years left on the contract with the Nets, Durant has alot to prove to Barkley and numerous people in the league and while the Nets have a roster that is one of the best in the league to help the 7ft sharpshooter, if the other superstar on the roster, Kyrie Irving dosen’t resign. KD might just end up having a miserable time.
