“We have lost hundreds of millions of dollars” NBA commissioner Adam Silver admits revenue fallout due to situation around China

Adam Silver the NBA commissioner has admitted that positive steps have been made against the situation around China regardless of the financial cost. As he also claimed that the league has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue since their controversial fallout with China which was also a no-win situation for the league. But Adam Silver is accepting it all as he is ready to pay the price by standing on the right side and doing the right things. He has always been a real one whenever it was necessary. As he has backed his players up many times and even stood up for equality, social justice, police brutality, and the BLM movement. He even stood up for the controversial tweet of Daryl Morey (the tweet was in support of the protest going on in Hong Kong) who sparked it all as he respects his freedom of expression.

Recently, in his press conference before the NBA Finals on Thursday Adam Silver addressed the media and answered most of their questions while also discussing the situation around the league and China. He had simple and straight responses addressing the whole situation as he quoted: “My position is… engagement is positive, particularly through sports. To keep people safe and prosperous, using sports as a platform to keep people around the world talking is critically important. At the same time, I don’t think it’s inconsistent with our values for our game to be broadcast in China and 200-plus other countries in the world. So that’s where things stand. Very specifically, I think it’s a positive thing right now that we are exporting this Americana, NBA basketball and the messages that come with it, to China.”

Adam Silver has always been strong with his words and this wasn’t the first time. As his media interviews where he openly addressed the situation with China had them dissatisfied and as a result, they stopped airing of NBA games in their country (CCTV holds exclusive T.V rights for NBA in China). Many Chinese partners have also suspended their partnership with the league since the tweet by Daryl Morey. But the commissioner never changed sides and has always been supporting the league for the freedom of expression and speech. In his recent interview, he even mentioned that the league will side with it and is ready to pay the price which is millions of dollars.

Adam Silver on Enes Kanter Freedom’s claim of his activism getting him wiped off from the league

Enes Kanter Freedom was one of the loudest voices against China as he used every opportunity he had to spread awareness about the social injustice the country (China) does. He even called for a boycott of February’s Winter Olympics in Beijing. But now he is out of the league as the Houston Rockets waived him. Freedom believes that it was because of his activism and constant criticism towards China as the league has many friends there and he even called out many bigs of the league. But Adam Silver denied the claim and mentioned that he sides with the rights and freedom of Enes Kanter Freedom.

Adam Silver talking about it quoted: “I have even spoked with Enes Kanter Freedom to make it absolutely clear to him that it was completely within his right to speak out on issues that he was passionate about.” Then addressing the financial losses the commissioner quoted: “We accept the losses… If those are the consequences, that’s what I mean that our values travel with us… Others since then have spoken out about their views around China and other places in the world. If the consequences are that we’re taken off the air or we lose money, we accept that.”
