The Western Conference Play-In game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New Orleans Pelicans panned out as exciting as it could’ve been. The OKC Thunder have displayed youngster-driven potential all season. The Pelicans, led by CJ McCollum, have put up a fighting spirit without Zion Williamson. While both teams have shown brilliant resilience, only one could tread a step closer to the playoffs. Playing at home the Pelicans hosted the Thunder in a thrilling elimination game for a shot at the eighth seed.

The game was quite evenly poised with both teams staying on their toes. A neck-to-neck battle, the eliminator ended in a Thunder victory with the score 123-118 at the end of regulation. While fans and media have been lauding OKC for their victory, many have enjoyed CJ McCollum’s fall to the Thunder. The comments mocking McCollum come in response to the guard’s reaction to Portland Trailblazers’ elimination from the Playoffs.

CJ McCollum spoke to the press and talked about his former team.I heard that their season is over. Word on the street is they’re not gonna make the playoffs this year which is very unfortunate,”. While this may seem like a sympathetic comment to some, many fans saw this as mockery. Many suspected a sense of distaste from the Pelicans guard.

His expression indicated a bad taste with regard to his departure from Portland. After all, he was one of their best and most admired players. He and Damian Lillard together added up as Portland’s prolific scoring duo. Therefore, bitter emotions after being asked to leave are quite human. However, what appears to have triggered fans was the unnecessary shade he threw on his former team’s failure.

There were a lot of expectations from CJ McCollum to deliver on the big stage. The Pelicans fans as well as those who have followed him were looking forward to McCollum rising to the occasion. Much to their disappointment, this game wasn’t anywhere near his best. The Pelicans guard played for over 40 minutes on the big day but managed to score no more than 14 points. Following his forgetful performance, fans are now calling him out on Twitter for mocking the Trailblazers’ elimination.

After winning this thriller, the Oklahoma City Thunder will proceed to the next game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The game will be played in Minneapolis as OKC will be the visitors yet again. If they manage to win their clash against the Wolves, they will end up clinching the eighth seed to then face the Western Conference toppers, the Denver Nuggets. The New Orleans Pelicans, on the other hand, are now out of the 2022-23 NBA season. McCollum and the Pelicans will look forward to a productive off-season to regroup for the next year around.
