Marcus Smart of the Boston Celtics has won the Defensive Player of the Year award as the league announced it on Monday. As a guard, it is really a great achievement for him. Since he is the second guard in league history to be honored by the award. Gary Payton was the first one as he got his hands on it in the year 1995-96. Marcus Smart is also the second Celtic ever to win the Defensive Player of the Year award after Kevin Garnett. He has played an important role in the Boston Celtics run so far the season as his great defensive skillset never failed to get the job done and add a dub to their side.
Marcus Smart this season has averaged 12.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game. He is the most efficient two-way guard so far the season who can even run as a primary point guard and act as a centre on the defensive end to hold the rivals down. He received 257 points (37 first-place votes) and finished first in the voting for the award. Following him are Phoenix Suns’ Mikal Bridges and Utah Jazz’s Rudy Gobert. Marcus Smart really had a great impact on the team as the Boston Celtics have led the defensive rating at 106.2.
Marcus Smart after getting honored by the award took his gratefulness to Twitter as he quoted: “Really blown away tbh. Incredibly honored! Just happy to be able to do get this award with our team and my brothers on the team. This is for you mama! ❤️ I love you.” He dedicated the award to his mom and it was a pre-planned surprise for him as even Gary Payton was present to present him the award.
