“Penalise someone for speaking the truth” NBA slaps Joe Lacob with $500,000 fine after comments on league tax systems being unfair

The NBA has been one of top grossing leagues of all-time solely due its chaotic nature and explosive freaks of nature they call players. Being as elite of an organisation as they it is obvious that the generated revenue will be exponentially higher than normal. But there is no doubt that it is also a business and they have a set of privacy policies of their own.

When it comes to the Golden State Warriors, the ownership and front office have done extremely well in terms of signing players and keeping them satisfied all at once. Bob Meyers is definitely someone to accredit. But recently, owner Joe Lacob had spilled certain details about the league that he should not have and as a result was fined $500,000.

The owner of the prestigious team joined his employee Andre Iguodala and former NBA player Evan Turner on their podcast, the Point Forward. Lacob revealed details of a policy that he feels is taxing and unfair. “The hardest thing of all is navigating this luxury tax, unfortunately. I went back to New York this week for labor meetings. I’m on the committee. And you know, obviously, the league wants everyone to have a chance and right now, there’s a certain element out there that believes we “checkbook win,” we won because we have the most salaries on our team.”

“The truth is, we’re only $40 million more than the luxury tax. Now, that’s not small but it’s not a massive number. We’re $200 million over in total because most of that is this incredible penal luxury tax. And what I consider to be unfair and I’m going to say it on this podcast and I hope it gets back to whoever is listening… and obviously it’s self-serving for me to say this, but I think it’s a very unfair system because our team is built by all top eight players are all drafted by this team.”
