The Philadelphia 76ers and the Brooklyn Nets have been battling hard in the Eastern Conference all season long, and their playoff series has been no different. But in Game 3 on Thursday night, things got heated between Joel Embiid and Nic Claxton, resulting in a flagrant foul that could have implications for the rest of the series.
The play occurred in the opening minutes of the game when Claxton threw down a powerful dunk over Embiid off a lob pass from Mikal Bridges. Embiid tried to contest the shot but ended up fouling Claxton and falling to the ground. As Claxton landed, he stepped over Embiid and gave him a hard look. The Sixers star did not appreciate the gesture and kicked his left leg up at Claxton’s groin area, sending him to the floor and sparking a scuffle between both teams.
The referees reviewed the play and decided to give Embiid a flagrant 1 for the kick, meaning he could stay in the game but would be ejected if he committed another flagrant or technical foul. Claxton received a technical foul for taunting Embiid. The Nets led 7-4 at that point and never looked back, that is till the fourth quarter when the powerful duo of Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid led the Sixers to a 102-97 extending their lead over the Nets to 3-0 in the series.
Embiid’s kick drew comparisons to Draymond Green’s stomp on Domantas Sabonis in Game 2 of the Sacramento Kings-Golden State Warriors series on Monday night. Green was ejected for that play and later suspended for one game by the league. However, Embiid avoided a similar fate, as he was not ejected or is unlikely to be fined by the NBA for his kick.

Twitterverse reacts harshly to Joel Embiid’s kick

The question of whether Embiid’s kick was intentional or accidental has been debated by fans and experts alike. Some argued that Embiid was simply trying to get up and did not mean to hit Claxton, while others claimed that Embiid was frustrated by Claxton’s dunk and step-over and wanted to retaliate.
Embiid finished the game with just 14 points, and 10 rebounds and shot just 5-of-13 from the field. He also left the game briefly in the first quarter due to an apparent injury but returned in the second quarter. He said that he was fine and that he would be ready for Game 4 on Saturday.
The Nets will try to save face with a 3-1 on Saturday, while the 76ers will look to sweep the series with a 4-0 lead. The kick may have added some extra spice to an already intense matchup between two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
