Is the college basketball star Bryan Greenlee right in his assessment?

“Luka Doncic is OVERRATED” – NCAA player Bryan Greenlee outlandishly calls out Mavericks All-star

Bryan Greenlee and Luka Doncic

NCAA player Bryan Greenlee doesn’t seem to be the biggest Luka Doncic fan as on a recent podcast with ‘Pretty Big Plays’, he was asked about who he thinks is an overrated player in the NBA and Greenlee didn’t mince words. He said, “People just focus on his offense only. Luka will literally take plays off, you don’t really see that too much. I feel like he doesn’t move well off ball , he doesn’t play defense.” Some bold words but an interesting take nonetheless.

While Doncic has little to no flaws on the offensive side of his game, defense has always been a major weakness for the Slovenian. He has been criticized on multiple occasions across his career so far for his lack of effort on the defensive end of the floor. Earlier this year, in April, Doncic was critical of his own defense as well as his team’s defense saying, “I think anybody can score on us. Whoever it is, anybody can score on us.” Another area where Doncic has been severely criticized is his physique, often looking sluggish and breathing heavily while running up and down the court.

Luka Doncic is already one of the greatest players in Dallas Mavericks’ history. After being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2018, Doncic was traded to the Mavericks and has become an icon in the city of Dallas. In the five seasons that he has spent with the Mavericks, Doncic has averaged 27.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game. He has won the Rookie of the Year award and is a 4-time NBA All-Star.

Doncic makes the game look ridiculously easy and while speed is not his strongest asset, he relies on his size, great shooting and exceptional passing, making him one of the most difficult players to guard in the league. Scoring-wise, Doncic crossed the 2000-point mark for the first time in his career and finished the 2022/23 season with an average of 32.4 points per game, only second to Joel Embiid, who took home the Scoring Champion award. Despite Doncic’s brilliance, the Mavericks failed to make it to the play-in tournament after finishing the regular season with a 38-44 record, best for 11th place in the Western Conference.

Doncic looks in great shape gearing up for the 2023/24 season

About three weeks ago, Doncic put up an Instagram story in which he was seen in great shape. The physical transformation is clearly visible, which means he has heard his critics and haters loud and clear.

With Doncic putting in the work this offseason and losing those extra pounds, we can expect him to be faster and much more quickly getting to his man on the defensive end.

With Kyrie Irving expected to remain with the Mavericks, he and Doncic will be difficult to stop on the offensive end as they continue to build chemistry. The Mavs will also be looking to add another piece around their two superstars before free agency ends. Doncic though will be the center of attention as the basketball world will be looking forward to what Luka ‘Magic’ has in store for the NBA in the 2023/24 season.
