Cam Thomas got himself in trouble after a game between the Chicago Bulls and the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets won the game 116-105 at the Barclays Center, their first since Kevin Durant’s departure. He was fined $40,000 by the NBA for using “derogatory and disparaging.” The league announced the fine on Thursday night.
After the win against the Bulls, during the courtside interview, Thomas said ‘no homo.’ The remark came when TNT’s Jared Greenberg asked the young gun about his new teammate Spencer Dinwiddie’s remarks about the trade. During the introductory press conference, which was re-introductory for Dinwiddie, he spoke about trade between Brooklyn and the Mavs. Dinwiddie joked that he and Dorian Finney-Smith were not the “best trade package but we’re the best looking, and the Nets needed some help in that department.”
When Greenberg asked Thomas about Dinwiddie’s comments, he said his teammate was just talking for laughs. “I seen it but I was like, man, he just talking for the laughs. We already had good looking dudes, no homo,” Thomas remarked. The NBA is an inclusive league. Comments by the young guard were not acceptable to the league and holding Thomas accountable shows that there is no room for error.
Cam Thomas apologized on Twitter following his homophobic comments

Not long after the game, Cam Thomas issued an apology on his Twitter account for his comments. The Nets player said that the derogatory remarks came out of his mouth because of his excitement over the team’s victory.
“I want to apologize for the insensitive word I used in the post-game interview. I was excited about the win and was being playful,” he wrote. Thomas also added that his intention was not to offend anyone; however, he took responsibility that his words have offended many. “I definitely didn’t intend to offend anyone, but realize that I probably did. My apologies again. Much love,” he added.
Interestingly, when Thomas made the remark, Greenberg said, “sure the league office will enjoy that one.” Fair to say, his prediction was right on the mark.
The second-year guard has found an increased role in the Nets’ new line-up after Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant’s trade. In the win against the Bulls, he had 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Before this, Thomas had scored at least 40 points in the last three games for the Nets. He became the second youngest player in NBA history to have back-to-back 40-point games.
