Nets HC Jacque Vaughn offers honest take on why Ben Simmons isn’t playing more minutes
Jacque Vaughan gave a very unique take on the declining production from Ben Simmons. There is a chance that he might play a different position.
Vaughan and Simmons
Brooklyn Nets have been the epicenter of most of the breaking news this season. From Kyrie Irving’s anti-semitism controversy to the season’s biggest blockbuster trade so far that involved Irving and Kevin Durant. Irving was sent to the Dallas Mavericks and Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns. However, the bigger questions still remain on the Nets’ roster. How is the head coach Jacque Vaughn going to deal with the declining production from Ben Simmons? In a loss against the New York Knicks, Simmons played only 13 minutes in the game, but that was not it.
He was also brought off the bench in the game which the Nets lost by 123-106. Ben scored 2 points on two shot attempts, three rebounds, and three assists. Answering Ben Simmons’s riddle, Vaughn had an interesting take. “It’s going to be some work that we have to do. Because you just take a look at what the lineup could potentially look like. You put another big next to Ben, then you got to figure out what the spacing is around him. Then if you put another playmaker next to him, then you got to figure out what Ben looks like without the basketball. Then if you go small with Ben, then you have to figure out can you rebound enough with him?” he said.
There is perhaps a possibility that since KD and Irving’s departure, most of the defense has shifted to Simmons. He is not an automatic machine on the offensive end of the floor and mostly distributes the ball on the floor. Defensively also, Simmons’ numbers have fallen down to a new low in steals and rebounding.
Ben Simmons might have to play a non-guard position for the Brooklyn Nets
He also added that the coach and staff are trying to figure out the best game plan to maximize Simmons’ production for the remainder of the season. “So the challenges are ahead of us. We’ll look them head on. We’ll figure it out,” said the head coach. There is a chance that out of his comfort zone, Simmons might elevate his game, especially, within the paint, because that’s where he plays the best.
The Nets might also want to try a lineup with the former Rookie of the Year playing as a non-point guard. “We have the personnel to figure it out. Whether it is me mixing and matching throughout different pieces of the game, and allowing him to have a group and run with a group, that part we’ll figure out, but you see the challenges that lie ahead,” Vaughn added. It is certainly an idea that the team can try since they have another player in Spencer Dinwiddie to handle the ball.
