A hilarious narrative about trying to outshine LeBron James during the team’s minicamp was recounted by Christian Wood, the latest acquisition of the Los Angeles Lakers, in a delightful twist. Big guy Wood, 28, set out to make an impression on his first day at San Diego State University’s practice facility early in the morning.
To his astonishment, James was already hard at work and covered in perspiration from his 7 a.m. workout. Wood’s desire to make an impression was in line with the Lakers’ proactive 2023 offseason strategy, in which they not only signed Wood but also added players in the form of Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes, Cam Reddish, and Taurean Prince through free agency.
“I tried to be one of the first ones in the gym,” Wood said to ESPN. “I think it was about 7 a.m., 7:20. First person I see is LeBron James. Already in a full sweat. He already beat me to it,” Wood said.
With the Dallas Mavericks, Wood demonstrated his abilities as one of the best big man backups in the NBA. He put up strong numbers in the 2022–2023 campaign, averaging 16.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. Fans are excited to see how the team’s young players and more experienced players work together as the Lakers prepare for their last preseason game against the Phoenix Suns on October 19. It should be an intriguing season.

Christian Wood Achieves Lifelong Dream as He Signs Contract with the Lakers
After a successful run with the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks in Texas, Christian Wood, a native of Long Beach, California, is about to achieve a lifetime goal by joining the Los Angeles Lakers in a joyful homecoming. Wood recently signed a lucrative two-year, $5.7 million contract with the Lakers, giving him the opportunity to play for his hometown team.
A player option for the 2024–25 campaign is included in the contract, extending his term of service.

“It feels amazing. It’s a dream come true. Lifelong dream come true. I’ve been watching the team since I was a child, so it’s amazing to be here and the atmosphere in the gym is great,” Wood said.
The Lakers’ offensive lineup will be strengthened with Wood’s arrival. His impressive scoring ability was on display in the 2022–2023 season, as he averaged 16.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 67 games. The fact that he shoots 51.5 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from three-point range highlights his effectiveness as a consistent scorer.
