As Kevin Durant set foot in Barclays Center again, now in Phoenix Suns’ colors, the buzz wasn’t really about the game. Instead, it was about what was not happening away from the hardwood. The once Brooklyn Nets hero isn’t looking for any fanfare or a flashy tribute video for his time at the franchise.
Adam Armbrecht, an editor for the Locked On Podcast network recently went on X to suggest why he thought KD shouldn’t get a tribute video. According to him, was he an average role player on the team, the franchise wouldn’t have much expectations for him. But that wasn’t the case.
Durant, with two Finals MVPs under his belt, is a superstar that franchises sign to ‘become’ a championship prospect. The thing is, Kevin Durant didn’t deliver with the Nets. So according to Adam, he doesn’t ‘deserve’ a tribute video, but the franchise may do it anyway for the PR. Durant isn’t too excited about it anyway, as he tweeted back:
Please don't, the night will be better without it.
This whole scenario isn’t just about Durant’s return. His era with the Nets was a cocktail of sky-high hopes, setbacks, and dreams that stayed just that—dreams. Yet, no one can question the magic he brought to the game every night.
The one KD shot that could have changed everything for the Nets
In the nail-biting drama of NBA playoffs, the game can swing on the smallest details. For Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets, a pivotal moment unfolded in the twilight moments of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Milwaukee Bucks back in 2021. With the Nets down two points and 6 seconds on the clock, they looked to KD to seal it all.
Durant even managed to make the tough shot. It was so close to catapulting the Nets into the Conference Finals. But alas, his foot was a tad over the line. What could have been a triumphant three-pointer was just a two, nudging the game into overtime where the Nets met their downfall. Post-game, Durant took it on the chin with a mix of disappointment and humor, playfully cursing his size 18s for the twist of fate
The Milwaukee Bucks went on to beat both the Atlanta Hawks and the Phoenix Suns in just six games to win the 2021 NBA Championship. After that loss, the Nets weren’t able to replicate their previous successes, and the stars slowly went their own ways. Kyrie Irving moved to the Dallas Mavericks and James Harden joined the Philadelphia 76ers.
