Chet Holmgren was chosen as the No. 2 overall pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2022 NBA draft, recognized for his versatility as a big man. Unfortunately, he missed the 2022-23 season due to a foot injury sustained during a Pro-AM game in the offseason. His official debut came in the 2023-24 season, impressing everyone, including the 2-time MVP Nikola Jokic.
Following a game where he secured 7 blocks and effectively defended the rim, Holmgren faced a significant challenge in Nikola Jokic. Despite the absence of their star player, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was struggling with his shots, Holmgren stepped up. He scored 19 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in a blowout loss against the reigning champions.
After the game, Jokic discussed Holmgren’s talents and areas for improvement. He mentioned that Chet needs to gain some weight but praised his unique talent. Jokic said:
He’s a really talented guy, but this is his first year. He’s still learning everything… I think he needs to be a little bit fatter, to be honest. But yes, he has a talent that is unique.
Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets dismantle Chet Holmgren and the Oklahoma City Thunder
The Denver Nuggets have been dominant in the regular season so far, showing no signs of slowing down since their championship season. Facing the young Oklahoma City Thunder team, they secured a one-sided victory. OKC couldn’t regain momentum as their star guard, Shai Gilgeous Alexander, struggled, scoring only 7 points in 28 minutes.
On the other hand, Nikola Jokic delivered another dominant performance, scoring 28 points, grabbing 14 boards, and dishing out 5 assists. The Nuggets maintained a double-digit lead at the end of each quarter, ultimately winning the game 128-95. Only Chet Holmgren from OKC scored more than 15 points, but he couldn’t replicate the impact on the defensive end against Jokic that he had against other teams.
