In a shocking development at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Serbian basketball player Borisa Simanic has reportedly lost a kidney following a freak accident during his team’s game against South Sudan. Initially, it was communicated by the Serbian Basketball Federation (KSS) that Simanic’s kidney functions were unaffected following the injury; however, fresh reports reveal a different scenario.
The incident took place in a high-pressure match against South Sudan. With less than two minutes to go, Simanic was subjected to a forceful blow in the kidney area from opposing player Nuni Omot. The impact was so severe that Simanic had to be taken off the court. Subsequently, he was rushed to a hospital in Manila for emergency medical care. Simanic underwent surgery the same night. He was diagnosed with internal bleeding and needed a blood transfusion.
Initial reports from the KSS seemed somewhat optimistic, suggesting that the player’s kidney had been preserved and was functioning as expected. Unfortunately, this information proved to be inaccurate, as further complications surfaced, forcing Simanic to undergo another surgery on Sunday. This news has not only ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament but also raises questions about the longevity of his basketball career.
