Golden State Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr is not someone who would shy away from accountability. In a candid chat with Shayna Rubin of the Mercury News, the coach discussed various topics, including his time with the Warriors. With the USA Basketball team’s training camp starting on August 1 for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where he is the head coach, he is cherishing the last moments with his family.
As his family time winds down, it seems clear that he has used this time to introspect and self-reflect. Steve Kerr has realized the things which he could and should have done in a better way last season with GSW. “I will say that I feel like I failed last year in connecting the group,” said Kerr, taking full responsibility with sincerity and honesty.
The last season was a rollercoaster for the Warriors, starting with the altercation between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole and subsequently, it escalating to Poole having beef with other Warriors players as well. They had a record that was not characteristic of the Dubs, 44-38, and a loss that was not at all expected against the LA Lakers in the conference semi-finals.

When being asked about the role of Chris Paul and how he would fit into the roster, Kerr got dodgy and said “All of that will happen in training camp….Until we get everyone on the floor, we won’t be able to assess what’s best for our team and how everything is going to look.” He seemed confident and wanted to have all of it work out at any cost and win at the highest level.
Moreover, as Bob Myers, the former General Manager, was about to lose his post due to his contract with Mike Dunleavy Jr., Kerr talked about how they both tried to get on the same page and agreed on roster changes. Because of their conversations, Kerr feels that “he’s fortified our roster with some really good veteran players and veteran leaders and balanced out the roster.” Veterans such as Dario Saric, Cory Joseph, and Chris Paul were handed out trades and contracts while Draymond Green was given an extension.
The summer months have given Kerr some time that he needed off the court, while at the same time giving him time to prepare and come back stronger. Driven by his introspection, he is all set to do it. Kerr’s candid confession and commitment to improvement will surely prove to be useful for the Dubs as they eye on the ring.
