OG Anunoby

The Los Angeles Lakers crowd booed OG Anunoby as he dunked the ball toward the end of the Toronto Raptors’ loss to the Lakers. The Lakers fans get free tacos from jack in the box if they hold their opposition below 111 points. The Raptors were at 110 while trailing by 12 points in the last minute, and the mutual understanding was to run down the clock. OG, however, knew about the free tacos and made sure he dunked to get the Raptors at 112 and deny fans their free tacos.

Anunoby had an impressive outing despite the Raptors’ loss, scoring 31 points on just 14 shots while shooting 86% from the field. Anunoby and Scottie Barnes combined for 63 points, but only one other Raptor had over 15 points. Toronto slumped to their third loss in a row as they sit in the 9th seed in the East, just one game ahead of the 11th seed.

Anunoby is averaging a career-high in points this season for the Raptors despite Toronto having a drop in standards. The Raptors finished as the 5th seed last season, but it looks like they will miss the playoffs this time. The Raptors’ loss to the Lakers came down to inefficient three-point shooting as the Lakers shot 43% from three to the Raptor’s mere 35%.

OG Anunoby and the Raptors are sinking and Toronto might just blow it all up

The Toronto Raptors as an organization have stagnated as a franchise ever since they won the championship in 2019. The Raptors had Kawhi Leonard for just one year and managed to get a championship out of it but that move has not benefitted them in the long run. The Raptors have not made the conference finals since then and completely missed the playoffs in 2021.

Anunoby burst onto the scene in 2020 when he hit a game-winning buzzer-beater with 0.5 seconds left to beat the Celtics in game 3 of the 2020 playoffs. Since then, OG has developed into a reliable second-option scorer and a solid defender. With Scottie Barnes by his side since last season, the duo has been touted as the future of the Raptors alongside long-time stars like Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet.

The Raptors got dusted in six games in the 2022 playoffs, and now, as they stare down a possible playoff absence again, it might be time for a re-tool in Toronto. Siakam and VanVleet are great on their day, but inconsistencies and injuries hamper them, whereas the young stars are not playoff ready yet. Toronto was a city of champions just four years ago, yet it feels like an eternity looking at the state of their team now.
