An old clip of Kobe Bryant showcases how his killer mentality was way different than modern NBA superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Old Kobe Bryant clip shows Giannis Antetokounmpo lacks MAMBA MENTALITY

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant was obsessed with winning and that’s what brought him into the GOAT debate. He was the hardest worker out there putting in the most effort with a killer mentality. Giannis Antetokounmpo also idolizes Kobe Bryant and has even completed his challenge of winning the MVP award and an NBA championship. But his recent reply to a reporter after the Jimmy Butler-led Miami Heat wrapped up the season for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee Bucks separated him from the Late Black Mamba’s conversation.

It’s very obvious that no one can ever become as great as Kobe Bryant and have the same mentality he did. So Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t all wrong here and can get a pass. But when he was questioned by a reporter after the curtains were pulled down on him that: “Do you view this season as a failure?” Giannis Antetokounmpo went on to disagree with the question and sent out a solid explanation for his response angrily, he even brought Michael Jordan into the conversation.

The 2×MVP Giannis quoted: “Oh my god. You asked me the same question last year, Eric. Okay, do you get a promotion every year? No. So every year your work is a failure…  Every year you work towards something… You working towards a goal is not a failure. Michael Jordan played for 15 years, won six championships so the other nine years was a failure – that’s what you’re telling me? It’s a wrong question, there’s no failure in sports. There’s good days, bad days. Some days you’re able to be successful, some days you’re not…  And this year somebody else is going to win, simple as that.”

According to Giannis Antetokounmpo, the season wasn’t a failure. Even though being the best team throughout the regular season they lost to the eight-seeded Heat in just 5 games. And, Kobe Bryant would have never said the same. As after losing the 2008 NBA Finals in six games to the Boston Celtics. During, the post-game presser he agreed the season to be a failure even though he won the MVP award and led his team to the Finals. But Giannis Antetokounmpo who got an early exit doesn’t think the same.

After the loss in the NBA Finals, when Kobe Bryant was questioned: “Kobe you won the MVP, you led the team to the Finals. How do you characterize the season?” He went on to reply: “Well I mean the goal was to win a championship, it wasn’t to win MVP or anything like that, it was to win a championship, so, from that aspect we failed”.

Obviously, the situations are different and Giannis Antetokounmpo maybe had some different goals which the team achieved while taking steps towards success. But let’s not forget he also rides with Mamba Mentality and will bounce back next season to avenge the embarrassment he’s facing at the moment.

Shaquille O’Neal also has a very similar take to Kobe Bryant. As reacting to Giannis Antetokounmpo’s exchange with the reporter who questioned the Bucks’ season to be a failure. O’Neal went on to say: “When you’re a great player, and they expect you to win, and you don’t win, in my mind, it is a failure. I played 19 seasons, and I failed 15 seasons. When I didn’t win, it was a failure. Especially when I made it to the finals versus the  Rockets and lost, made it to the finals for the fourth time with the Lakers and lost, it was definitely a failure.”

Further, Shaquille O’Neal also added: “He’s not a failure as a player, but is it a failure of a season? I would say yes… But for me when we didn’t win it was always my fault and it was definitely a failure.”

Let’s not forget Shaquille O’Neal has a lot of respect for Giannis and believes him to be just like him and even the MVP of the league. He also mentioned that he understands the explanation given by Greek Freak to the reporter and correctly explained how the season failed and not him. These words of Shaq should surely help Giannis Antetokounmpo so that next season he can lead the Milwaukee Bucks to another championship just like in 2021.
