Paul George considers title with Clippers to “100% outweigh” winning one with Lakers

Paul George feels a championship with the Lakers would not mean as much as one with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Paul George considers title with Clippers to “100% outweigh” winning one with Lakers

Paul George

Paul George joined the Los Angeles Clippers in 2019 along with Kawhi Leonard in a bid to win their first NBA championship. Since then the Clippers have made the conference finals just once, in 2021. However, that has mostly been due to Kawhi being in and out of the team due to injury as well as PG getting injured last season. “A championship with the Clippers would 100% outweigh a championship with the Lakers“, said PG in an interview with GQ Sports.

Paul George had to watch the Lakers win a championship during his first season with the Clippers while they blew a 3-1 lead in the playoffs. The former MVP candidate says that a championship with the Clippers would be legacy-defining as it has never been done before. They have only made one conference finals appearance in their history and that was in 2021.

In terms of playoff experience, Paul George and Kawhi have their fair share with Kawhi having two rings and George having made multiple conference finals. The Clippers will have to hope both their stars can stay healthy if they want to break this playoff curse. However, even a finals appearance would be a big deal this season as the West is stacked.

Paul George and LA will have to go through a Western Conference warzone this season

Paul George and Luka Doncic

The Clippers are surrounded by talented and hungry teams in the West this year. After watching Kyrie and KD both move West this winter, every team is shaken up. Two all-stars joining teams with existing all-stars is never a pleasant sight for opponents. Kawhi and Paul George started this wave in the West in 2019 which was followed by LeBron and AD and now many more teams.

Apart from the super-teams, the West also has young competitive teams like Memphis and Sacramento. The Kings look to make the playoffs after 16 years which is the longest drought ever. To add to all of this you have the dominating Nuggets in the #1 seed with reigning two-time MVP Jokic. The Nuggets are currently the only 40+ win team in the West with 5 games over the #2 Grizzlies.

The Clippers have to go through a lot of talented rosters if they want to win a championship. Their more frequent playoff opponent in recent years, the Dallas Mavericks, also got stronger. Dallas added Kyrie Irving to a conference finals squad with Luka Doncic leading them. However, the Clippers did get the better of the Mavericks in 2020 and 2021. Kawhi and PG will hope to be Luka’s kryptonite but Luka looks more deadly than Superman this season.
