In a recent candid discussion with Los Angeles Clippers superstar, Paul George, on the “Podcast P with Paul George,” WNBA champion and Las Vegas Aces sensation, A’ja Wilson, stated her goal of being one of the all-time greats in women’s basketball.
Wilson always showed a genuine love for the game, from her early days as the top Hoop Gurlz recruit in the class of 2014 to making waves with the Aces. Her recent statements, makes clear the extent of her ambition.
“When you’re talking GOATS of the W, I need my name to be up there, at least Top 3,” Wilson passionately stated. Her dedication to writing her name into the books of women’s basketball history is what drives her quest for fame, rings, and honors.
Paul George was quick to acknowledge her achievements, noting, “No bullsht, you’re on some LeBron sht with what you’ve accomplished at a young age.”
Wilson’s basketball journey wasn’t always predetermined. She had a tendency as a child to embrace her “girly-girl” side while avoiding sweat. However, she developed a love for the sport and began a shining career after being inspired by her father, who played basketball abroad in Sweden. She was also intrigued by the excitement of winning games with teammates.
The decision to join South Carolina was another pivotal point in her life. She was a devoted fan of Candace Parker and had even witnessed Parker’s jersey retirement by the Lady Vols, but it was the close bond she had with Dawn Staley that made her choose South Carolina over Tennessee.
A’ja Wilson’s reflections on team dynamics and legacy
Beyond her personal ambitions, Wilson also touched upon team dynamics and the broader societal implications of her career. She boldly dismissed the tag of the Aces being labeled a ‘superteam’. According to Wilson, this label, imposed by external narratives, builds undue pressure. “We’re talented and skilled, yes. But when it comes to a superteam, nah because I feel like that’s where the pressure come in.”
Wilson also emphasized the significance of her statue, which is located on a campus where her father and grandparents were once denied admission due to racial discrimination. A proof of change and progress, the statue symbolizes much more than just her achievements on the court.
Lastly, Wilson commented on rumors regarding LeBron’s future and offered a hint that the NBA legend might not be ready to retire just yet.
With a career built on determination, talent and toughness, Wilson’s drive to be remembered as a GOAT in women’s basketball is an inspiration, and her journey with the Aces is far from over.
