Even before declaring for the NBA draft, many analysts had already designated the French sensation Victor Wembanyama as the future winner of the Rookie of the Year award once he entered the league. However, Paul George doesn’t hold the same opinion as the majority of the league, as he has chosen another big man to be a potential winner of the award next season.
During a recent episode of his podcast, “Podcast P with Paul George,” PG was asked about his pick for the Rookie of the Year award, and he chose Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Holmgren missed the last season due to a foot injury he suffered during a Pro-AM game. PG said that Chet is going to play a lot of games and is going to be part of a winning team, unlike Victor, who will be playing for the Spurs. The Spurs don’t have many established players like Shai Gilgeous Alexander and Josh Giddey.
“I’m gonna go with Chet. Just because I think he [Chet Holgrem] is gonna play a ton, they’re going to be a winning team, and the way they play, it’s going to be fun to watch. And so I think he’s going to get a lot of coverage. Because he plays on both ends, he blocks more shots, he’s a little bit more polished, and further along,” George said.
PG further added that while Wembanayama has played a lot of overseas basketball, it will take him some time to develop as he will have to go through a learning curve. This was evident during his first summer league game. He also mentioned that while Chet didn’t play during his rookie year due to an injury, being in the league for a year has allowed him to see his teammates grow and watch the game up close. As a result, he is a bit further along in his development than Victor.
“I think Wemby’s going to have a little learning curve. I know Chet didn’t play much due to the injury in his rookie year. But being in the league, seeing the game up close for a year, it’s going to give him that much more of a head start,” George added.

Paul George and Draymond Green highlight Victor Wembanyama’s weakness

Victor Wembanyama’s entry onto the floor in a Spurs jersey this upcoming season will position him to become a phenomenon. Despite standing at an impressive 7 feet 5 inches tall, Wembanyama has gained recognition for his remarkable ball-handling skills, his ability to generate his own shot, and his expertise in protecting the rim and contesting perimeter shots.
But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, as the French phenom is yet to play at the highest level. During an episode of ‘Podcast P,’ Draymond Green and Paul George dissected Wembanyama’s game and its potential translation to the NBA. They talked about how his shot isn’t that efficient and that with the three-point line further away, his shot won’t land as frequently.
Draymond also added that if nothing goes right for Wembanyama, he would still have the ability to be a great rim protector. They said that a lot of teams are looking for elite rim protectors, and one of them is signed to a massive contract just to protect the rim – pointing towards Wembanyama’s fellow French player, Rudy Gobert. Spurs fans would hope Wemby develops to achieve his full potential and bring them glory like big men in the past, like David Robinson and Tim Duncan did.
