What happens when the folks at Inside the NBA, Kenny Smith, Grant Hill, Shaquille O’Neal and Ernie Johnson, are joined by hip hop star Nicki Minaj? Well, a freestyle session known as a “cypher” breaks out. Unquestionably, Shaquille O’Neal is the most dominant superstar to play in the league. Standing at 7-foot-1 and weighing a whopping 325 pounds, Shaq was a nightmare for any player who had the duty to guard him. And because of this inhuman size of his, The Diesel was able to command over the paint on both sides of the court, night in and night out for nearly two long decades.
As you would expect, Kenny Smith and Grant Hill could definitely use some work. Ernie Johnson, well, yeah, it is Ernie Johnson, but he did finish off the cypher with a mic drop. The big highlight of the rap session, however, came whenever Shaq picked up the mic sporting a grill and delivered a nice little marriage proposal to Miss Minaj. And Shaq had one of the most iconic freestyling moments on the sets of NBA on TNT when global rapping icon Nicki Minaj made a surprise appearance on the set.
Host Shaquille O’Neal has been known to test his voice the Rap industry, so after Nicki delivered her off-the-dome freestyle. O’Neal grabbed the mic to share a few bars. Almost immediately, one of Shaq’s lines was asking Nicki to marry him, and when she said, “No,” everyone fell out in laughter.
The renowned rapper along with Shaquille O’Neal, Grant Hill, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson decided to have a little freestyle battle. Let’s just say Hill, Ernie and Smith could use a little bit more practice, while Minaj and Shaq were out there spitting some great bars.
“I give zero Fs, they ain’t got no chill / And I’m riding the bassline like ‘Quille O’Neal,” Nicki rapped.
O’Neal had one of the most iconic bars, as he decided to hilariously propose the rapper during his bars.
“I’m B-I-G, Nicki Minaj will you marry me?” to which she hilariously and maybe with surprise responded, “No.” So Shaq adjusted accordingly: “Oh man, she said no! Man, messing up the flow!”
Nicki posted a clip of the moment and gave a little behind-the-scenes insight while revealing that she recently purchased Shaq’s chair for her engineer, in 2021.
The Hall-Of-Famer was pretty smooth in moving on to the next line, but surely that one had to hurt Shaq. The NBA world is always connected with the entertainment industry, especially since the 2000s. Ever since Michael Jordan made the NBA a worldwide phenomenon, a lot of stars have been showing their love for the game. The world of Hip-Hop, once again, has deep connections with NBA. Anyhow, Shaq will continue to entertain us and Nicki Minaj would love to have a rap contest with him.
